THE ALBANY DAMIEN CENTER INC.S MISSION IS TO ENHANCE THE LIVES OF PEOPLE AFFECTED BY HIV/AIDS IN AN AFFIRMING ENVIRONMENT AND TO REDUCE NEW INFECTIONS IN THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE.OUR VISION IS A COMMUNITY WHERE PEOPLE WITH HIV/AIDS ACHIEVE THEIR DESIRED POTENTIAL AND ARE RESPECTED AS COWORKERS, NEIGHBORS, AND FRIENDS, WHILE STRIVING FOR AN HIV FREE GENERATION.
The Albany Damien Center Inc.s mission is to enhance the lives of people affected by HIV/AIDS in an affirming environment and to reduce new infections in the communities we serve. Our vision is a community where people with HIV/AIDS achieve their desired potential and are respected as coworkers, neighbors, and friends, while striving for an HIV free generation.
WELLNESS - INCLUDES SMART MEALS (EST. 2001) WHICH PROVIDES NUTRITION HEALTH EDUCATION COMBINED WITH FOOD AND MEALS TO IMPROVE THE NUTRITIONAL WELL-BEING AND FOOD SECURITY OF VERY LOW-INCOME PERSONS WITH HIV AND AIDS. THE WELLNESS PROGRAM ALSO PROVIDES ACCESS TO PHARMACY SERVICES DESIGNED TO ENSURE EACH PERSON WITH HIV IS RECEIVING THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF HIV MEDICATION TREATMENT. IN 2019, SMART MEALS PROVIDED 33,612 MEALS THROUGH HOMEMADE ON- SITE HOT BREAKFASTS, LUNCHES, AND DINNERS, PANTRY BAGS FULL OF FRESH VEGETABLES, LEAN MEATS, AND RECIPES, AND FOOD GIFT CARDS TO LOCAL SUPERMARKETS. 108 MEMBERS WERE PROVIDED WITH NUTRITION HEALTH EDUCATION SESSIONS HELD IN GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL SETTINGS. THROUGH THE PHARMACY SERVICES, 80% OF MEMBERS ACHIEVED HIV VIRAL SUPPRESSION, A KEY MEDICAL INDICATOR OF A PERSON'S HEALTH.
HOUSING -_(EST. 2015) IN 2019, THE ALBANY DAMIEN CENTER PROVIDED PERMANENT SUPPORTIVE HOUSING FOR 39 PERSONS DIAGNOSED WITH HIV WHO WERE FORMERLY HOMELESS AS PER HUD DEFINITION. EACH PERSON RECEIVED INTENSIVE CASE MANAGEMNT AIMED TO ENSURE SUCCESFULL HOSUING OUTCOMES IN A HOUSING-FIRST MODEL. WE ESTIMATE THE TAXPAYER SAVINGS FROM HOUSING TO BE BETWEEN $975K AND $1.95M FROM THESE EFFORTS IN 2019 ALONE.
Community Center includes the Living Room, Employment Pathways, MPower!, Undetectables, Treasure chest Thrift Store programs and other programming and social/recreational activities provided in a trauma-informed drip-in community center space designed to be comfortable and welcoming for all members. In 2019, the Albany Damien Center provided services to 350 persons diagnosed with HIV and they visited the drop-in living room over 11,145 times. 80% of persons served had income under $10,000 and 95% had income under $20,000, well below the Federal Poverty Level. MPower, located at 77 Central Ave, Albany, NY provided HIV/STD/HVC prevention and access to care services to 26 persons with 99 HIV prevention services provided to members. The Employment Pathways Program provided assistance to 47 persons with HIV to help them return to work and school, while providing assistance with benefits analysis and budgeting, resume writing, interview skills, and job placement resulting in 17% of program participants finding employment. The Undetectables assisted participants with medication adherence and access to help each person successfully achieve HIV viral suppression.
