Organizations Filed Purposes: MAYAN HANDS IS DEDICATED TO PROVIDING SUSTAINABLE INCOME-GENERATING OPPORTUNITIES TO MAYAN WOMEN ARTISANS IN GUATEMALA, IN EFFORTS TO COMBAT EXTREME POVERTY. SEE FURTHER DETAIL ON SCHEDULE O.

MAYAN HANDS ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM PROVIDES CONSISTENT FAIR WAGE INCOME TO MORE THAN 180 MAYAN WOMEN ARTISANS IN GUATEMALA, BY CONNECTING THEM TO CONSUMERS IN DEVELOPED COUNTRIES. WE EDUCATE WOMEN ARTISANS, MOST WITH LOW LITERACY RATES, IN RURAL COMMUNITIES ON BUSINESS PRACTICES, INCLUDING CALCULATING FAIR TRADE WAGES, COMPLETING NECESSARY DOCUMENTATION FOR BUSINESS AND FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS, AND FILING TAXES. WE PROVIDE ONGOING DESIGN AND TECHNICAL TRAINING IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS. IN ADDITION, WE PROVIDE COMMUNITY-BASED TRAININGS ON LEADERSHIP SKILLS, DEMOCRATIC COOPERATIVE STRUCTURE AND DECISION MAKING, OCCUPATIONAL AND PERSONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY, AND SELF-ESTEEM.

MAYAN HANDS INVESTS IN THE NEXT GENERATION BY PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY TO BOTH THE DAUGHTERS OF OUR ARTISAN PARTNERS AND THE ARTISANS THEMSELVES. EDUCATION OF GIRLS CAN BREAK THE CYCLE OF POVERTY IN A SINGLE GENERATION, BUT MAYAN GIRLS FACE ENORMOUS BARRIERS TO RECEIVING AN EDUCATION SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY ARE GIRLS. DURING THIS FISCAL YEAR, WE PROVIDED SCHOLARSHIPS AND FAMILY STIPENDS TO 51 GIRLS WHO WOULD NOT OTHERWISE BE ABLE TO ATTEND SCHOOL: 26 IN BASICO (JUNIOR HIGH), 19 DIVERSIFICADO (SENIOR HIGH) AND 6 IN UNIVERSITIES. WE DISTRIBUTED SCHOOL SUPPLIES TO 209 CHILDREN OF OUR ARTISAN PARTNERS. WE PRESENTED AN ONGOING INTERACTIVE PROGRAM FOR ALL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS AND THEIR MOTHERS, ADDRESSING ISSUES OF GENDER EQUITY, WOMENS RIGHTS, AND SELF-ESTEEM.

EMERGENCY ARTISAN SUPPORT: DUE TO THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC, SALES OF ARTISAN GOODS IN THE UNITED STATES DROPPED 70% IN APRIL AND MAY OF 2020. AT THE SAME TIME, THE GOVERNEMNT OF GUATEMALA IMPOSED SEVERE RESTRICTIONS TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF THE PANDEMIC AND OUR ARTISAN PARTNERS WERE UNABLE TO WORK AND EARN INCOME. MAYAN HANDS RESPONDED IN TWO WAYS:(1)PROVIDED HYGIENE KITS AND EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS ABOUT COVID-19 AND HOW TO PREVENT TRANSMISSION. (2)DISTRIBUTED SUPPLEMENTAL INCOME TO OUR ARTISAN PARTNERS WHILE THEY WERE UNABLE TO WORK. TWO ROUNDS OF MONTHLY INCOME WERE DISTRIBUTED DURING 2019-2020 FISCAL YEAR AND MORE IS SCHEDULED FOR THE FOLLOWING FISCAL YEAR.
