Hope on a String is a non-profit, grassroots organization that seeks to foster an environment of social transformation and economic development in Haiti through participation in music.
We seek to foster an environment of social transformation and economic development in Haiti through participation in music. Music is a key pillar of Haitian culture, serving not only as an emotional outlet and a healing mechanism for individuals and communities, but also as a universally-accessible vehicle for galvanizing community unity. We believe in building community engagement through participation in music and facilitating support for community-driven initiatives. In our model, music excellence in individuals is a potential by-product in our ultimate goal: community engagement in social issues.
School Partnership Program - Hope on a String partners with primary schools in the greater Arcahaie region to provide on-site music education classes to students. In 2019, our school network included more than 20 schools and thousands of participating students. Each student receives at least 3 hours of music and cultural education per week throughout the school year. HOAS provides trained instructors and educational materials, and we collaborate with school directors to provide an enriching experience that complements traditional education subjects in the national curriculum.
Community Center - Hope on a String operates a community center in the rural region of Arcahaie wherein we offer a comprehensive slate of performing arts classes across music, dance, and theater. Classes are open to all who wish to participate but prioritize youth in the region. HOAS offers hundreds of hours of classes per week, across disciplines and skill levels. We also utilize our community center as a space for dialogue, unity, and community engagement. We hold skill-building workshops, community dialogues, and offer the space to community groups who wish to use it for their own development activities. In excess of 600 students enrolled in our community center classes and offerings in 2019.
