Organizations Filed Purposes: A House on Beekmans aim is to create a seamless series of programs from birth to career that empowers the next generation of the South Bronx to reach their full potential.`

Preschool:Our preschool reached some pretty significant milestones in the 2018-2019 school year. Previously we had one full-time class as a part of the Department of Educations PreK-for-all initiative as well as two small, part-time, private classes. This year, we expanded to three full-time classes, all in partnership with the Department of Education including one class as a part of their brand new 3K-for-all initiative. This expansion increased our total number of students from 35 to 41. Our preschool was identified this year by the Department of Education as the Provider Spotlight program, sharing our expertise as a high-quality program with all the other providers in our borough. We were also visited by leading educational institutions such as the Bank Street College of Education to learn from our successful model.

Elementary Afterschool Program:In the 2018-2019 school year, in addition to making academic gains, our students were exposed to many creative and culturally enriching experiences. For example, students visited the Museum of Native American History and took the South Ferry for the first time to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Most of our students are of African American, Caribbean, or Afro Latino descent so these experiences were especially relevant for them to learn about their indigenous roots and discuss topics such as immigration and civil rights. Our children also had the opportunity to understand the science behind cooking with a STEAM curriculum that taught them about the diversity we can find in foods that reflect our community and cultural richness, how to grow food and the importance of math in cooking. One last highlight of the year was experiential learning activities corresponding with monthly themes such as Hispanic Heritage Month.

Middle school Afterschool Program:This year our students participated in many different activities such as book club, computer enrichment, and cooking. They also participated in College and Career Advisory and heard from many professionals including an actress, a bodybuilder and an adventure journalist who shared about their careers. One of the major highlights from the year was a trip our students took to Texas over Spring Break to visit colleges and experience the culture. Along with visiting the University of Texas, Texas Christian University and the University of Houston, students spent a day on a ranch, visited the Texas State Capital and traveled the Texas Mission Trail. Finally, we celebrated our first class of 8th graders graduating from middle school to high school. We guided the students through the rigorous high school selection process and every single student was accepted into one of their top five choices.
