BRONX-WESTCHESTER AREA HEALTH EDUCATION CENTER IS A NEW YORK NOT-FOR-PROFIT CORPORATION THAT PROVIDES INFORMATION AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDIVIDUALS IN OBTAINING A CAREER IN THE HEALTHCARE PROFESSION IN BRONX AND WESTCHESTER.
SUMMER HEALTH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (SHIP) A SIX-WEEK OPPORTUNITY FOR UNDERREPRESENTED AND/OR ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS. THIS PROGRAM EXPOSES STUDENTS TO A VARIETY OF CAREERS IN THE HEALTH FIELD AS WELL AS VARIOUS HEALTH ISSUES AFFECTING THEIR COMMUNITIES.THE SUMMER HEALTH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (SHIP): MAY - JULY. SELECTED PARTICIPANTS ARE COMMITTED TO WORK AT THEIR DESIGNATED CLINIC OR HOSPITAL FOR THREE DAYS (3) A WEEK FROM 9:30 AM TO 3:30 PM. IN ADDITION, THERE WILL BE A MANDATORY WORKSHOP (DIDACTICS) ONCE A WEEK.THE WORKSHOPS WILL ENCOMPASS A FULL DAY (9:30 AM TO 3:30 PM) AND WILL INCLUDE: HEALTH RELATED LECTURES, JOB READINESS SKILLS, FIELD TRIPS, AND OTHER HEALTH RELATED ACTIVITIES. SELECTED PARTICIPANTS ARE ALSO REQUIRED TO TAKE PART OF A TEAM COLLABORATED HEALTH THEMED PROJECT. AT THE END OF THE PROGRAM, THE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO ATTEND A MANDATORY CLOSING CEREMONY, AND PRESENT HIS/HER FINAL PROJECT.COMMUNITY HEALTH EXPERIENCE PROGRAM (CHE): DEVELOPED THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NEW YORK COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE AND COLLABORATION WITH THE NEW YORK METROPOLITAN REGIONAL AHEC OFFICE AND THE THREE AHEC'S SERVING NEW YORK CITY; (BROOKLYN/QUEENS/LONG ISLAND AHEC, BRONX/WESTCHESTER AHEC, AND MANHATTAN-STATEN ISLAND AHEC). THIS PROGRAM IS A SIX-WEEK SUMMER PROGRAM GEARED TOWARDS MEDICAL SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO HAVE COMPLETED THEIR FIRST YEAR, AND ARE INTERESTED IN OBTAINING EXPOSURE TO DIVERSE COMMUNITY AND PUBLIC HEALTH EXPERIENCES.THE METRO AHEC'S PLACE STUDENTS IN VARIOUS COMMUNITY-BASED HEALTH AND HEALTH RELATED ORGANIZATIONS THAT WOULD NOT ONLY EXPOSE THEM TO UNDERREPRESENTED POPULATIONS, BUT GIVE THEM A HANDS-ON APPROACH TO BECOMING AWARE OF AN ARRAY OF ISSUES AND CONCERNS, AFFECTING HEALTH OF THE COMMUNITY.GIVEN THAT THEIR ACADEMIC TRAINING IN MEDICAL SCHOOL WILL FOCUS ON SCIENCE AND CLINICAL MEDICINE, STUDENTS ARE STRATEGICALLY PLACED IN NON-CLINICAL SETTINGS TO ENHANCE THEIR LEARNING EXPERIENCE. THE METRO AHECS BELIEVES THAT HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WITH AN UNDERSTANDING OF COMMUNITY HEALTH ISSUES WILL HAVE A GREAT IMPACT ON MINIMIZING HEALTHCARE DISPARITIES IN THE FUTURE. IN ADDITION TO PLACEMENT IN COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, STUDENTS ARE ALSO PROVIDED A DIDACTIC LECTURE SERIES ONCE A WEEK, WHICH COVERS DIFFERENT COMMUNITY/PUBLIC HEALTH CENTERED TOPICS AND FIELD TRIPS.HEALTH CAREERS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (HCIP): THIS SIX-WEEK INTERNSHIP PLACEMENTS IN HOSPITALS AND COMMUNITY-BASED HEALTH CENTERS AND ORGANIZATIONS. WEEKLY DIDACTIC SESSIONS WITH HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AND FIELD TRIPS, NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES WITH 2ND YEAR MEDICAL STUDENTS AND PROFESSIONAL. AND THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE EXPOSED TO HEALTH CAREERS AND COMMUNITY HEALTH ISSUES WITHIN THE INTERSECTION OF THE SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH.OPIOID PREVENTION EDUCATION PROJECT (OPEP): THIS INTENSIVE TWO-HOUR EDUCATIONAL DELIVERY AND/OR TRAINING VIA PARTNERSHIPS WITH VARIOUS NGO'S AND CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK INSTITUTIONS, BWAHEC WAS ABLE TO BRING AWARENESS AND SUPPORT RESOURCES TO 678 COMMUNITY MEMBERS, YOUTH, THEIR FAMILIES, AND PROFESSIONALS. BY INCORPORATING EACH COMMUNITIES' NEEDS, BWAHEC UTILIZES THE POWER OF MUSIC, RESIDENT EXPERIENCES, AND TESTIMONIES TO PROVIDE AND ENRICHED VIRTUAL EXPERIENCE. OVER 600 COMMUNITY MEMBERS HAVE BEEN SERVED.TEEN HEALTH COMMUNITY PROJECT (THCP): THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES WESTCHESTER COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMMING AND SATURDAY CLASSES TO INCREASE THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF HEALTH CARE DISPARITIES AND THE SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH AS IT RELATES TO THEIR COMMUNITIES IN MOUNT VERNON, NEW ROCHELLE, WHITE PLAINS, AND YONKERS. PARTICIPANTS ARE PART OF A COLLABORATIVE TEAM EFFORT WITH VOLUNTEER SPEAKERS AND MENTORS. STUDENTS INTERACT WITH PUBLIC SPEAKERS, LEARN THE ART OF NETWORKING, INTERACT WITH HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS AND INCREASE THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF HEALTH INFORMATION. MINORITY MEDICAL STUDENTS ACT AS VOLUNTEER MENTORS, ASSISTING THCP STUDENT WITH THEIR FINAL PROJECT DELIVERY. THE FINAL COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT INVOLVES PRESENTATIONS FROM LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS, WORKING TO INTRODUCE THEIR YOUNGER PEERS TO THE HEALTH CARE FIELD THROUGH AN ENGAGEMENT FAIR. FORTY-FIVE (45) HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HAVE ENROLLED IN THCP.NURSING & MEDICINE: A PARTNERSHIP THROUGH LEHMAN COLLEGE AND THE CUNY INSTITUTE FOR HEALTH EQUITY WITH THE ICLA DA SILVA FOUNDATION, SIGMA THETA TAU INTERNATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY, NATIONAL BLACK NURSES ASSOCIATION, AND CHI ETA PHI SORORITY. BWAHEC SUPPORTED A BRONX INITIATIVE WITH THE AYSA CAMPAIGN, SUPPORTED BY THE ICLA DA SILVA FOUNDATION TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT PERIPHERAL BLOOD STEM CELL (PBSC). AS PATIENTS FROM RACIALLY DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS FACE GREATER CHALLENGES IN FINDING DONORS. THIS FULL DAY CAMPAIGN PROVIDED EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS AND REGISTRY WITH OVER A HUNDRED COMMUNITY MEMBERS REGISTERED TO BE THE MATCH. COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING: IN COLLABORATION WITH THRIVE NYC WE ARE PLEASED TO HAVE OFFERED A MULTI-GENERATIONAL WEEKEND ADULT MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING WITH OVER 85 IN ATTENDANCE. COMMUNITY MEMBERS, STUDENTS, AND HEALTH PROFESSIONALS RECEIVED VALUABLE TOOLS IN THEIR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR RESPONDING TO THOSE WHO SUFFER WITH MENTAL ILLNESS.
