HOMELESS, PREVENTION AND RELOCATION PROGRAMSDURING FISCAL YEAR 2020, THE HOMELESSNESS PREVENTION AND ACCESS TO BENEFITS DEPARTMENT OFFERED RENT AND UTILITY ARREARS ASSISTANCE TO 855 INDIVIDUALS, HELPING THEM MAINTAIN PERMANENT HOUSING AND AVOID FUTURE EVICTION. THROUGH OUR HPD AND EMERGENCY GRANT PROGRAMS, WE WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE $170,097 IN ARREARS PAYMENTS. FURTHERMORE, OUR WALK-IN OFFICES AND SINGLE STOP PROGRAM OFFERED BENEFITS AND ENTITLEMENTS ACCESS TO 2,376 INDIVIDUALS, OFFERING FURTHER SUPPORT AND STABILITY TO BRONX COMMUNITY MEMBERS. STREET HOMELESSNESS IN THE BRONX DECLINED OVER 30% IN THE PAST DECADE AS A RESULT OF THE EFFORTS OF THE BRONXWORKS HOMELESS OUTREACH TEAM, LIVING ROOM AND PYRAMID SAFE HAVEN, AND SOCIAL SERVICES OF THE BROOK. THE LIVING ROOM DROP-IN CENTER SERVED AS THE ONLY DROP-IN CENTER FOR HOMELESS ADULTS IN THE BRONX WHERE INDIVIDUALS COULD RECEIVE A HOT MEAL, A SEAT, AND A SHOWER 24 HOURS A DAY, 365 DAYS A YEAR. OUR STAFF MADE 38,036 CONTACTS WITH STREET HOMELESS PERSONS ACROSS THE BRONX IN FY20. THE BRONXWORKS LIVING ROOM, PYRAMID SAFE HAVEN, AND STABILIZATION BEDS PROGRAM PROVIDED TEMPORARY SHELTER TO A TOTAL OF 3,398 PERSONS IN FY20. THE HOMELESS OUTREACH TEAM, LIVING ROOM AND PYRAMID PLACED 88 FORMERLY STREET HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS INTO PERMANENT HOUSING OVER THE YEAR. AT OUR JEROME AVENUE MEN'S SHELTER, WE SERVED 479 CLIENTS AND MADE 40 PLACEMENTS IN FY20.AT THE BROOK, BRONXWORKS PROVIDED SUPPORTIVE SERVICES TO 127 PREVIOUSLY LONG-TERM HOMELESS PERSONS WITH SERIOUS AND PERSISTENT MENTAL ILLNESS. AT COOPER GARDENS, OUR NEWEST CONGREGATE SUPPORTIVE HOUSING SITE FOR FORMERLY HOMELESS FAMILIES AND SINGLE ADULTS, WE SERVED 95 HOUSEHOLDS, TOTALING 236 INDIVIDUALS.IN FY20, THE HOMEBASE PROGRAM SERVED OVER 3,500 HOUSEHOLDS. OF THE CASES THAT HOMEBASE COMPLETED, ABOUT 75% HAVE SUCCESSFULLY REMAINED IN THEIR HOMES OR FOUND ANOTHER STABLE PLACE TO LIVE, WITH OTHERS RECEIVING REFERRALS FOR EXTENDED SERVICES. THE MAJORITY OF OUR CLIENTS (69%) WERE FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN, WHILE OTHER 31% COMPRISED OF SINGLE ADULTS OR ADULT FAMILIES.FAMILY SHELTERS FOR THE HOMELESS PROGRAM PROVIDED TEMPORARY HOUSING FOR 614 FAMILIES OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR. SHELTER STAFF FOUND PERMANENT HOUSING FOR 147 FAMILIES. HEALTH SERVICES FOR SHELTER FAMILIES WERE PROVIDED ONSITE, WITH A MEDICAL DIRECTOR AND MEDICAL STUDENTS OFFERING ENHANCED SERVICES FOR FAMILIES IN NEED.

CHILDREN AND YOUTH PROGRAMS THE BRONXWORKS CHILDREN AND YOUTH DEPARTMENT AIMS TO EMPOWER YOUTH TO ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS THROUGH THE PROVISION OF ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT, SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL SUPPORT, HEALTH/WELLNESS, LEADERSHIP, AND COLLEGE READINESS PROGRAMS THAT DRAWS FROM THE STRENGTHS OF OUR COMMUNITIES. MORE THAN HALF OF THE CHILDREN SERVED BELONG TO SINGLE PARENT HEAD OF HOUSEHOLDS AND PRIMARY LANGUAGES SPOKEN AT HOME INCLUDE BENGALI, SPANISH, BAMBARA, MANDINKA AND ENGLISH. PRIMARY FUNDING AT THE GRAND CONCOURSE SITE INCLUDES ADMINISTRATION FOR CHILDREN'S SERVICES (ACS) THROUGH AN EARLY LEARN CONTRACT WHILE FUNDING FOR THE 1472 MONTGOMERY SITE COMES FROM A NYC DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION UPK CONTRACT ALONG WITH PRIVATE PAY AND SCHOLARSHIPS. BRONXWORKS ACCEPTS YOUTH REFERRED TO OUR PROGRAM FROM ACS. OUR PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN PARTAKE IN A VARIETY OF GROUP SOCIAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDING OUR MULTI-CULTURAL THANKSGIVING FAMILY DINNER, OUR SPRING TROUT RELEASE AND OUR GRADUATION CEREMONIES.FY 2020 MARKED THE 29TH YEAR OF BRONXWORKS OPERATING THE HOME INSTRUCTION FOR PARENTS OF PRE-SCHOOL YOUNGSTERS (HIPPY) PROGRAM. AN EVIDENCE-BASED EARLY LEARNING AND PARENT ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM, HIPPY SERVED 47 FAMILIES WITH 52 CHILDREN IN FY 2020. COMPASS AND SONYC SERVICES FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL AGED CHILDRENBRONXWORKS-OPERATED AFTER SCHOOL, HOLIDAY, AND SUMMER DAY CAMP COMPASS PROGRAMS SERVED 650 KINDERGARTEN THROUGH FIFTH GRADE (K TO 5) YOUTH IN FY 2020. SONYC MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAMS OPERATED BY OR ORGANIZATION SERVED 200 YOUTH IN THE SAME TIME PERIOD. COMPASS PROGRAMS WERE HOUSED AT FIVE LOCATIONS. SONYC PROGRAMS OPERATED FROM THREE SITES.COMPASS AND SONYC PROGRAMMING OFFERED EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT, SUCH AS HOMEWORK ASSISTANCE AND STEM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATH). THEY ALSO ENGAGED IN ACTIVITIES THAT HELPED YOUNG PEOPLE DEVELOP SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SKILLS. THESE INCLUDE COLLABORATING WITH OTHERS, DEVELOPING POSITIVE PEER RELATIONSHIPS, ENHANCING DECISION-MAKING SKILLS, BUILDING SELF-CONCEPT, AND ACQUIRING CONFIDENCE. COMMUNITY SCHOOLSBRONXWORKS-SPONSORED COMMUNITY SCHOOLS PROGRAMS INCLUDE THE TWO SCHOOLS OF THE WEBSTER CAMPUS (IS 313 AND IS 339), PS 42, AND THE JILL CHAIFETZ TRANSFER SCHOOL. COMBINED, IN FY 2020 THEY SERVED 1,500 CHILDREN. BRONXWORKS SUPPORTS EACH SCHOOL BY PROVIDING OUTREACH, COUNSELING, TEST PREP SUPPORT, MID AND END OF YEAR ACTIVITIES JUST TO NAME A FEW. OUR STAFF MEMBERS ARE EMBEDDED IN THE SCHOOLS' INFRASTRUCTURE, WORKING CLOSELY WITH SCHOOL PRINCIPALS AND THEIR ADMINISTRATION TO BUILD COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS, BRING IN RESOURCES, AND PROVIDE SUPPORT TO CHILDREN AND FAMILIES SO THAT SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT CAN BE AT OPTIMUM LEVELS.THE JILL CHAIFETZ TRANSFER SCHOOLIN COLLABORATION FOR NEW VISIONS FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS, BRONXWORKS HELPED CREATE THE JILL CHAIFETZ TRANSFER SCHOOL (JCTS) IN THE AUTUMN OF 2007. WE HAVE REMAINED A PARTNER WITH JCTS SINCE.IN FY 2020, JCTS RECEIVED NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION (NYCDOE) LEARNING TO WORK FUNDING TO SUPPORT THE SCHOOL'S CAREER EXPLORATION AND JOB READINESS EFFORTS. ALL 210 JCTS STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN CAREER EXPLORATION ACTIVITIES, WHILE 40 WERE PLACED IN SUBSIDIZED INTERNSHIPS WITH PARTNER INSTITUTIONS. THESE INCLUDED CVS, THE HARLEM ANIMAL HOSPITAL, AND READING PARTNERS.CORNERSTONE COMMUNITY CENTERSIN FY 2020, BRONXWORKS OPERATED FOUR CORNERSTONE COMMUNITY CENTERS IN OR NEAR PUBLIC HOUSING COMPLEXES IN BRONX COMMUNITY DISTRICTS 1, 3, AND 4. THEY ARE THE BETANCES, CLASSIC, PYRAMID, AND ST. MARY'S CORNERSTONES. IN FY 2020, THEY SERVED 1,552 ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE, AND HIGH SCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN.CORNERSTONE PROGRAMS OPERATED SEVEN DAYS A WEEK DURING THE SUMMER (JULY AND AUGUST 2019) AND SIX DAYS A WEEK DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR (SEPTEMBER 2019 TO JUNE 2020). THEY REMAINED IN OPERATION FROM MARCH THROUGH JUNE 2020 AS A SHELTER IN PLACE ORDER WAS IMPOSED ON NEW YORK CITY WITH FEW EXCEPTIONS. SOCIAL DISTANCING REQUIREMENTS AND TEMPERATURE CHECKS WERE STRICTLY ENFORCED FOR IN-PERSON ACTIVITIES. REMOTE ACTIVITIES WERE UNDERTAKEN WHERE POSSIBLE.CORNERSTONES ARE UNIQUE COMMUNITY SPACES BECAUSE THEY INVOLVE MANY NEIGHBORHOOD PARTNERS. IN FY 2020, THESE PARTNERS INCLUDED CITY HARVEST, GROW NYC, AND THE GIRLS SCOUTS USA. ALONG WITH THE DOVE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PREVENTION INITIATIVE, ACTIVITIES THAT INVOLVED PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS ENGAGED A TOTAL OF 4,000 PERSONS FROM THE FOUR CENTERS.PROGRAMS FOR OLDER YOUTHTHE BRONXWORKS SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM (SYEP) EXPANDED SIGNIFICANTLY DURING THE SUMMER OF 2019, THE BEGINNING OF FY 2020. IT SERVED 1,368 YOUTH AGES 14 TO 24 IN A VARIETY OF SERVICE-LEARNING PROJECTS AND PAID INTERNSHIPS FOR SIX WEEKS. THE PROGRAM WAS EXPENDED TO INCLUDE TARGETED SERVICES IN A NYCHA COMPLEX, THE BRONX RIVER HOUSES, AND IN THREE BRONX-BASED HIGH SCHOOLS.THE CENTER FOR ACHIEVING FUTURE EDUCATION (CAFE) SERVED 532 HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH AND 172 MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH IN FY 2020. IN THE SUMMER OF 2019, 24 YOUTH WHO WOULD ENTER THE 11TH OR 12TH GRADE IN THE AUTUMN OF 2019 PARTICIPATED IN THE HISTORY MAKERS COMPONENT OF CAF, AN INTENSE SIX-WEEK IMMERSION EXPERIENCE DONE IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE ROSE HILL CAMPUS OF FORDHAM UNIVERSITY. CAF'S SAT PREP COMPONENT WAS OFFERED THROUGH NEW YORK CARES. A TOTAL OF FOUR VOLUNTEER TUTORS WORKED WITH OUR STUDENTS ON SATURDAYS TO PREPARE THEM FOR THE SAT EXAM. THE PROGRAM WAS SPECIFICALLY FOR HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS FROM LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS WITH WHICH BRONXWORKS HAS LONGSTANDING RELATIONS, INCLUDING THE BRONX LEADERSHIP ACADEMY II, THE HARLEM VILLAGE ACADEMY, CARDINAL HAYES HIGH SCHOOL, AND AVIATION HIGH SCHOOL. A SELECT GROUP OF 23 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN ANOTHER COLLEGE ACCESS PROGRAM AT HOSTOS AND BRONX COMMUNITY COLLEGES UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE BRONX OPPORTUNITY NETWORK (BON). SEVEN COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS, INCLUDING BRONXWORKS, MET MONTHLY WITH COLLEGE ADMINISTRATORS AS BON PARTNERS TO IDENTIFY CHALLENGES HINDERING STUDENTS' PROGRESS AND TO FIND WAYS TO SOLVE THESE PROBLEMS. BON PROVIDED MEETINGS WITH FINANCIAL AID OFFICERS AND COLLEGE ADVISORS. FAFSA WORKSHOPS AND GUIDANCE FOR COLLEGE COURSE SELECTION WAS ALSO PROVIDED. PEER MENTORS HELPED INCOMING FRESHMEN NAVIGATE THEIR FIRST YEAR OF COLLEGE. OUR FASTTRACK PILOT BRIDGE TO COLLEGE PROGRAM WAS IN ITS SECOND YEAR IN FY 2020, PROVIDING YOUTH WITH CUSTOMIZED COLLEGE TOURS ALONG WITH COLLEGE SELECTION, APPLICATION, AND ENROLLMENT SUPPORT. IN FY 2020, BRONXWORKS COMPLETED ITS SECOND YEAR OF EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT PROGRAM AT THE THEATRE ARTS PRODUCTION COMPANY (TAPCO) HIGH SCHOOL. THE PROGRAM SERVED 34 PARTICIPANTS FROM SEPTEMBER 2019 THROUGH JUNE 2020. EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT PROGRAMS AT VALIDUS PREPARATORY HIGH SCHOOL AND THE BRONXWORKS CAROLYN MCLAUGHLIN COMMUNITY CENTER CONTINUED IN FY 2020. THE TWO PROGRAMS COMBINED SERVED 59 HIGH SCHOOL-AGED YOUTH, PROVIDING HOMEWORK HELP, TUTORING, AND PROJECT-BASED LEARNING.A UNIQUE ASPECT OF PROJECT-BASED LEARNING TOWARDS THE END OF FY 2020 WAS THE EXPLORATION OF SOCIAL ISSUES THAT EMERGED AS AN OUTGROWTH OF THE KILLINGS OF BREONNA TAYLOR AND GEORGE FLOYD. FOCUS GROUPS WERE CONVENED IN JUNE 2020 TO PROVIDE YOUTH WITH A SAFE SPACE TO EXPRESS THEIR FRUSTRATIONS AND CONCERNS.YOUTH IN THE HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS RECEIVED COLLEGE APPLICATION ASSISTANCE THROUGH CAF. THEY ALSO PARTICIPATED IN VIRTUAL TOURS OF CUNY AND HOWARD UNIVERSITY.

HEALTH PROGRAMS BRONXWORKS MAINTAINED A HOST OF HEALTH PROMOTION, NUTRITION EDUCATION, AND HEALTH-FOCUSED CASE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT FY 2020. HIGHLIGHTS OF SOME OF THESE PROGRAMS ARE FOUND IN THE PARAGRAPHS THAT FOLLOW.THE BRONXWORKS YOUTH FOOD JUSTICE CORPS (YFJC) PROGRAM ENGAGED 76 YOUNG PEOPLE IN FY 2020. FROM JULY 2019 THROUGH JUNE 2020, 46 WERE ENGAGED IN FOOD JUSTICE EDUCATION AND FOOD ADVOCACY PROGRAMMING, CREATING VIDEOS ON SUGARY DRINK CONSUMPTION AND THE IMPACT OF SYSTEMIC RACISM ON HEALTHY FOOD ACCESS. A TEAM OF YFJC YOUTH VISITED A SELECT NUMBER OF SOUTH BRONX GROCERY STORES TO ENCOURAGE STORE OWNERS OR MANAGERS TO REDESIGN THEIR FLOOR DISPLAYS TO PROMINENTLY FEATURE FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES INSTEAD OF HIGH-CALORIE, LOW-NUTRITIONAL VALUE SNACKS OR PROCESSED FOODS. TWO GROUPS OF YFJC YOUTH HELPED MANAGE BRONXWORKS FARM STANDS NEAR THE MCLAUGHLIN COMMUNITY CENTER AND THE BELVIS HEALTH CENTER. ANOTHER 30 PARTICIPATED IN THE TEEN BATTLE CHEF HEALTHY EATING AND COOKING DEMONSTRATION, REACHING SEVERAL HUNDRED YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULTS IN THE PROCESS.DURING THE JULY 2019-NOVEMEBR 2019 FARM STAND SEASON WE ENGAGED 694 PARTICIPANTS AT THE BRONXWORKS FARM STAND AT THE MCLAUGHLIN COMMUNITY CENTER WITH 66 COOKING DEMOS. AT THE STEPS OF THE BELVIS HEALTH CENTER, OUR MOTT HAVEN FARM STAND ENGAGED 467 PARTICIPANTS WITH 61 COOKING DEMONSTRATIONS. ALL TOLD, THE FARM STANDS ENGAGED 1,161 PARTICIPANTS AND DELIVERED 127 COOKING DEMONSTRATIONS. THE FARM STANDS COMBINED SOLD 10,000 POUNDS OF FRESH PRODUCE THAT WAS LOCALLY AND REGIONALLY CREATED.FROM JULY 2019 THROUGH JUNE 2020, THE BRONXWORKS MATERNAL AND INFANT HEALTH PROGRAM ENGAGED 340 PARTICIPANTS. THEY PARTICIPATED IN 45 WORKSHOP SESSIONS THAT COVERED TOPICS RELATED TO BREASTFEEDING, SAFE SLEEP, AND PHYSICAL FITNESS. ONE IN TEN ADULTS WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM LACKED HEALTH INSURANCE.THE BRONXWORKS SNAP (SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM) EDUCATION PROGRAM BEGAN IN OCTOBER 2019. BY JANUARY 2020, STAFF WAS IN PLACE TO LAUNCH PROGRAM SERVICE ACTIVITIES. FROM JANUARY THROUGH JUNE 2020, THE PROGRAM CONDUCTED 45 WORKSHOPS THAT WERE ATTENDED BY 309 PERSONS. THE PROGRAM CONDUCTED 16 WORKSHOPS VIRTUALLY THAT WERE ATTENDED BY 152 PERSONS.THE SNAP EDUCATION PROGRAM USED SOCIAL MEDIA TO RAISE HEALTHY EATING AWARENESS AMONGST INDIVIDUALS WHO RECEIVE OR ARE ELIGIBLE FOR SNAP BENEFITS. THE 62 FACEBOOK OR INSTAGRAM POSTS LED TO A TOTAL OF 954 LIKES ON THE SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS. THE BRONXWORKS COMPREHENSIVE ADOLESCENT PREGNANCY PREVENTION (CAPP) PROGRAM ENGAGED 110 YOUNG PEOPLE IN FY 2020. ITS COUNTERPART PROGRAM, THE SEXUAL RISK AVOIDANCE EDUCATION (SRAE) PROGRAM, ENGAGED 21. BOTH PROGRAMS USED EVIDENCE-BASED CURRICULA TO HOST WORKSHOPS ON HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS, HUMAN SEXUALITY, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, AND SEXUAL IDENTITY. THE BRONXWORKS TARGETED PREVENTION SUPPORT SERVICES (TPPS) PROGRAM ENGAGED 100 PERSONS WITH CHRONIC HEALTH CONDITIONS IN FY 2020. OF THIS NUMBER, 56 RECEIVED HIV/STD RISK REDUCTION COUNSELING, LEADING TO 445 INSTANCES OF REFERRALS TO RETENTION AND ADHERENCE SERVICES.TPPS COMMUNITY OUTREACH EFFORTS ALSO RESULTED IN 28 INTERVENTIONS AND ENROLLEES PARTICIPATING IN 56 COUNSELING GROUPS. THE AVERAGE AGE OF PARTICIPANTS WAS 52.THE BRONXWORKS CASE MANAGEMENT HEALTH EDUCATION (CMHE) PROGRAM PROVIDES CASE MANAGEMENT AND HEALTH EDUCATION SERVICES TO HIV-POSITIVE INDIVIDUALS WITH AN UNSUPPRESSED VIRAL LOAD. IN FY 2020, CMHE ENROLLED 31 PARTICIPANTS. STAFF HAD 704 ENCOUNTERS WITH THE ENROLLEES, LEADING TO THE PROVISION OF 830 FORMS OF SERVICE. FORMS OF SERVICE INCLUDED EMERGENCY CRISIS INTERVENTION, HOME VISITS, CASE CONFERENCE CONSULTATIONS, HEALTH EDUCATION COUNSELING, AND CASE MANAGEMENT FOLLOW UP.
