TO INVEST IN BRONX YOUTH BY PROVIDING TRANSFORMATIVE OUTDOOR EXPERIENCES, COMMUNITY SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT TO HELP THEM BECOME SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE CHANGEMAKERS AND REACH THEIR POTENTIAL.
TO EDUCATE AND EMPOWER UNDERPRIVILEGED PEOPLE AND BENEFIT THEIR UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES
THE CATROCK YOUTH LEADERSHIP ACADEMY PROVIDED STUDENTS FROM OUR BRONX PARTNER SCHOOLS THE SKILLS NEEDED TO BE OUTDOOR AND COMMUNITY LEADERS. THE PROGRAM PROVIDED RIGOROUS EXPERIENTIAL TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS WHICH ENGAGED STUDENTS OVER SEVERAL MONTHS OF THE SCHOOL YEAR AND INCLUDED MULTI-DAY OUTDOOR EXPEDITIONS, OUTDOOR SKILLS DEVELOPMENT, LEADERSHIP TRAINING, ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION, AND WILDERNESS FIRST AID CERTIFICATION. MOST OF THE ACADEMY'S ACTIVITIES WERE BASED IN THE OUTDOORS SO STUDENTS LEARNED THROUGH REAL, HANDS-ON EXPERIENCES. EXPEDITIONS INCLUDED, BUT WERE NOT LIMITED TO, HIKING, CAMPING, BACKPACKING, ROCK CLIMBING, RAFTING, AND SNOWBOARDING.THE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY PARTNERED WITH THE NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED SIERRA CLUB INSPIRING CONNECTIONS OUTDOORS (ICO) PROGRAM AND THE DISCOVER OUTDOORS FOUNDATION.CATROCK YOUTH LEADERSHIP ACADEMY GRADUATES CO-LED OUTDOOR TRIPS FOR YOUNGER STUDENTS THROUGH THE ICO NETWORK LOCALLY AND NATIONALLY. THEY BECAME GROUP LEADERS IN MANY OF CATROCK'S TRIPS AND COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS. GRADUATES FREQUENTLY RETURNED TO VOLUNTEER TO HELP MENTOR YOUNGER STUDENTS.COLLEGE AND CAREER GUIDANCE TO ALL OF OUR STUDENTS TO HELP THEM MAKE MORE INFORMED AND BETTER EDUCATIONAL AND CAREER CHOICES. CATROCK PARTNERS WITH NEW SETTLEMENT, A BRONX-BASED COMMUNITY CENTER, TO OFFER WORKSHOPS FOR BOTH STUDENTS AND PARENTS. THIS YEAR'S WORKSHOPS WERE IN FINANCIAL AID AND LOANS, SPECIAL ADMISSIONS PROGRAMS, SELECTING THE RIGHT SCHOOL AND MAJORS, AND SUPPORT FOR PARENTS. WE ALSO LAUNCHED A COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM.
THE ADVENTURE MAKERSPACE & DESIGN LAB IS A UNIQUE MAKERSPACE PROGRAM WHERE STUDENTS REPAIR, DESIGN AND HELP PRODUCE THEIR OWN OUTDOOR GEAR USING BOTH HIGH-TECH AND LOW-TECH TOOLS SUCH AS COMPUTERS, 3D PRINTERS, AND SEWING MACHINES.STUDENTS LEARNED THE BASICS OF REPAIR AND DESIGN IN ORDER TO KEEP THEIR CLOTHING AND OUTDOOR GEAR FUNCTIONING LONGER TO HELP SUPPORT THE ENVIRONMENT BY CUTTING DOWN ON CONSUMPTION. THEY ALSO LEARNED HOW TO REPURPOSE USED GEAR REINFORCING THEIR ROLE IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY MOVEMENT. THIS YEAR WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PATAGONIA OUR STUDENTS REPAIRED HUNDREDS OF LIGHTLY WORN OR DAMAGED OUTERWEAR GARMENTS FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR FAMILIES.
