Organizations Filed Purposes: IN THE TRADITION OF THE SISTERS OF MERCY, MERCY CENTER EMPOWERS WOMEN AND THEIR FAMILIES IN THE SOUTH BRONX TO LIBERATE THEMSELVES FROM ECONOMIC POVERTY. WE PROMOTE THE RIGHT TO AN IMPROVED QUALITY OF LIFE BY ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF THE WHOLE PERSON, DEVELOPING SKILLS FOR HEALTHY FAMILY LIVING AND ECONOMIC ADVANCEMENT, AND BUILDING A COMMUNITY OF RESPECT, HOSPITALITY, AND NON-VIOLENCE. FOR 30 YEARS, MERCY CENTER HAS RESPONDED TO FOUR CHRONIC PROBLEMS IN OUR MOTT HAVEN NEIGHBORHOOD: UNEMPLOYMENT AND A CYCLE OF ECONOMIC POVERTY, VIOLENT AND OPPRESSIVE BEHAVIORS IN FAMILIES AND THE COMMUNITY, UNDER-PERFORMING PUBLIC SCHOOLS, AND THE POWERLESSNESS AND ESTRANGEMENT THAT ACCOMPANY THE ISOLATION INHERENT IN THE IMMIGRANT EXPERIENCE. WE TAKE AN INTEGRATED AND HOLISTIC APPROACH TO THE DELIVERY OF SERVICES THAT FALL INTO SIX OVERALL PROGRAM AREAS: 1. ADULT EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROVIDES PARTICIPANTS WITH AN INTEGRATED APPROACH TO LANGUAGE ACQUISITION, BASIC ADULT EDUCATION, SKILLS

TO EMPOWER WOMEN AND THEIR FAMILIES IN THE SOUTH BRONX TO LIBERATE THEMSELVES FROM ECONOMIC POVERTY.

ADULT EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT/IMMIGRANT SERVICES- THESE PROGRAMS ACHIEVED STRONG RESULTS IN FISCAL YEAR 2020. WE ENROLLED 1,395 ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL) STUDENTS, 1,197 COMPLETED ONE, TWO OR THREE CYCLES, AND 84% WERE PROMOTED TO THE NEXT LEVEL. ALSO, WE CONTINUED TO OFFER TWO CONTEXTUALIZED LEARNING CLASSES FOR HOSPITALITY WORKERS AND ONE FOR HEALTHCARE WORKERS. WE CONTINUED TO INTEGRATE AN ONLINE LEARNING COMPONENT INTO EVERY ESOL AND HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY (HSE) CLASS. WE COMPLETED OUR FIFTH FULL YEAR OF HSE TEST PREPARATION CLASSES AND 79 STUDENTS COMPLETED ONE, TWO, OR THREE CYCLES. IN MARCH 2020, WE SUCCESSFULLY TRANSITIONED ALL CLASSES TO ONLINE PLATFORMS, DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. IN FY20, OUR IMMIGRANT SERVICES PROGRAM SUBMITTED A TOTAL OF 156 CITIZENSHIP APPLICATIONS, 53 DACA APPLICATIONS AND 73 GREEN CARD RENEWAL APPLICATIONS, WHICH MET OR EXCEEDED OUR YEARLY CONTRACT GOALS. IN ADDITION, 80 INDIVIDUALS WERE ABLE TO CONSULT WITH AN IMMIGRATION ATTORNEY ABOUT A VARIETY OF LEGAL ISSUES. IMMIGRATION SERVICES STAFF ALSO PROVIDED INFORMATIONAL WORKSHOPS TO PARTICIPANTS ABOUT CHANGES IN FEDERAL IMMIGRATION POLICIES. 86 STUDENTS COMPLETED OUR CITIZENSHIP CLASSES FOR INDIVIDUALS PREPARING TO TAKE THE CITIZENSHIP EXAM.

FAMILIA ADELANTE (FAMILY FORWARD)/ FAMILY SKILLS/ SOCIAL SERVICES I A GROUP OF PROGRAMS THAT AIMS TO STRENGTHEN FAMILY FUNCTIONING AND TO HELP PARTICIPANTS TO NAVIGATE SYSTEMS AND RESOLVE PROBLEMS. IN FY20, 152 PARTICIPANTS ENROLLED AND 88 COMPLETED ONE OR MORE OF OUR PARENTING SKILLS CLASSES/ACTIVITIES: PARENTING (ENGLISH), PARENTING (SPANISH), ABRIENDO PUERTAS (FOR LATINO PARENTS OF YOUNG CHILDREN), ANGER MANAGEMENT (SPANISH) AND MOM'S SUPPORT GROUP. FY20, WE COMPLETED THE THIRD FULL YEAR OF OUR COLLABORATIVE 'WHOLEFAMILY APPROACH' PROJECT, FAMILIA ADELANTE (FAMILY FORWARD), IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FIVER CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION, QUALITAS OF LIFE FOUNDATION, AND MINDFULNESS PRACTITIONER TANYA VALLE. DURING FY20, WE ENGAGED 162 FAMILIES IN FAMILIA ADELANTE ACTIVITIES. 70 FAMILIES WERE ENGAGED IN ACTIVE CASE MANAGEMENT WHILE 7 FAMILIES MAINTAINED THEIR PROGRAM STATUS. OUR SOCIAL SERVICES UNIT PROVIDED CASE MANAGEMENT, ADVOCACY, AND REFERRALS FOR PARTICIPANTS ENROLLED IN OTHER MERCY CENTER PROGRAMS. THE UNIT PROVIDED A TOTAL OF 279 CASE MANAGEMENT SESSIONS FOR 192 INDIVIDUALS. THE TOP THREE ISSUES (BY NUMBER OF VISITS) ADDRESSED IN FY20 WERE HOUSING/NYCHA, FOOD STAMPS, AND IMMIGRATION.

THE YOUTH PROGRAMS UNIT OFFERS ENRICHMENT PROGRAMMING FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN A SAFE, SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT. IN FY20, MERCY CENTER PROVIDED MORE THAN 250 YOUNG PEOPLE WITH 17,344 OFF THE STREET ACTIVITY HOURS IN OUR AFTER SCHOOL, SATURDAY READING ENRICHMENT, HOUSE OF THE ROSES DANCE PROGRAM, CHORUS, SUMMER CAMP, AND BABYSITTING PROGRAMS. 100% OF THE PARTICIPANTS IN OUR AFTER SCHOOL AND OUR SATURDAY READING PROGRAM WERE PROMOTED TO THE NEXT GRADE. IN FY20, WE CONTINUED OUR HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL STEM/ROBOTICS PROJECT AS PART OF OUR AFTER SCHOOL AND SUMMER CAMP PROGRAMS. THE STEM PROJECT SUCCESSFULLY TRANSITIONED TO ONLINE CODING DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC.
