BAM IS THE HOME FOR ADVENTUROUS ARTISTS, AUDIENCES, AND IDEAS.
SPRING 2020 BAM'S 2020 SPRING OPENED IN JANUARY 2020 WITH AN EXTENDED RUN OF MEDEA, AUSTRALIAN DIRECTOR SIMON STONE'S NEW STAGING OF EURIPIDES, STARRING ROSE BYRNE AND BOBBY CANNAVALE. IN MARCH, THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC FORCED BAM TO CLOSE ITS VENUES AND TO CANCEL THE REMAINDER OF THE SEASON. DESPITE THE CHALLENGES, BAM PRESENTED THE FIRST EVER VIRTUAL DANCEAFRICA FESTIVAL, WHICH INCLUDED VIDEOS OF PAST DANCEAFRICA PERFORMANCES, LIVESTREAMED TALKS ABOUT THE FESTIVAL'S HISTORY, AN ONLINE BAZAAR FEATURING LOCAL VENDORS, A VIRTUAL DANCE PARTY, AND STREAMING HIP-HOP AND WEST AFRICAN DANCE CLASSES.
BAM FILM FY2020 IN FY20, BAM FILM SERVED IN-PERSON AUDIENCES OF 145,197 AND 4,998 TICKET HOLDERS VIA STREAMING PROGRAMS AFTER BAM'S CINEMAS CLOSED IN MARCH AS A RESULT OF COVID-19. BAM FILM PRESENTED 246 FILMS, INCLUDING 38 VIRTUAL FEATURES. HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE: PUNKS, POETS & VALLEY GIRLS: WOMEN FILMMAKERS IN 1980S AMERICA, WHICH SHOWCASED DECADE-DEFINING CLASSICS BY DIRECTORS WHO BROUGHT A SENSITIVITY TO FEMALE SUBJECTIVITY AND EXPERIENCE HITHERTO RARE IN MAINSTREAM GENRE CINEMA (AUGUST 7-20, 2019); GARRETT BRADLEY'S AMERICA: A JOURNEY THROUGH RACE AND TIME, AN EXPLORATION OF THE VISIONARY FILMMAKER'S STUNNING VISION OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN REPRESENTATION ON SCREEN THROUGH SEVEN DIFFERENT PROGRAMS, EACH OFFERING A UNIQUE PRISM THROUGH WHICH TO CONSIDER THE HISTORY AND FUTURE OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF BLACKNESS IN AMERICAN CINEMA. (OCTOBER 11-17, 2019); AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY TONI!: A CELEBRATION OF BLACK WOMEN, WHICH FEATURED FILMS CURATED SPECIFICALLY TO HONOR TONI MORRISON'S LEGACY ON WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN HER 89TH BIRTHDAY (FEBRUARY 18-25, 2020).
NEXT WAVE 2019 FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE ITS INAUGURAL YEAR IN 1983, THE 2019 NEXT WAVE FOCUSED EXCLUSIVELY ON ARTISTS WHO WERE MAKING THEIR BAM DEBUTS, CELEBRATING THE SPIRIT OF THE ORIGINAL FESTIVAL BY SUPPORTING A NEW GENERATION OF PERFORMANCE MAKERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD WITH GENRE-BENDING PRODUCTIONS. THESE INNOVATIVE PRESENTATIONS CHALLENGED CONVENTIONAL FORMS OF THEATER, DANCE, MUSIC, AND OPERA, AND ENGAGED BAM AUDIENCES AS ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS IN CREATING, SHARING, AND INTERPRETING ART. IN BRAZILIAN DIRECTOR CHRISTIANE JATAHY'S MULTIMEDIA THEATER PIECE WHAT IF THEY WENT TO MOSCOW?, AUDIENCE MEMBERS JOINED ACTORS ONSTAGE FOR A PARTY SCENE, THEN SWITCHED THEATERS TO VIEW THE ENTIRE PIECE AGAIN AS A LIVE-EDITED FILM; NEW ZEALAND PERFORMANCE ARTIST KATE MCINTOSH CONDUCTED A PLAYFUL TACTILE EXPERIMENT IN HER PIECE IN MANY HANDS, WHICH ASKED AUDIENCE MEMBERS TO EXPLORE VARIOUS OBJECTS USING ONLY THEIR SENSE OF TOUCH; AND VISITORS WHO ENCOUNTERED BRITISH ARTIST SELINA THOMPSON'S INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION RACE CARDS COULD LEAVE THEIR RESPONSE TO ONE OF THE ARTIST'S ONE THOUSAND HANDWRITTEN QUESTIONS ABOUT RACE. AUDIENCES ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND CREATIVE CONVERSATIONS AND WORKSHOPS WITH NEXT WAVE ARTISTS TO CONTEXTUALIZE PRESENTATIONS SUCH AS NAT RANDALL'S THE SECOND WOMAN AND UNICORN THEATRE'S THE END OF EDDY.
