Founded in 1912, the Brooklyn Music School is a community music and performing arts education organization based in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Since the schools inception, the school has been a proponent of arts education and the cognitive benefits of high quality music, dance and drama instruction and performance. Programs at the school range from an Outreach program throughout the boroughs of the City of New York to onsite culturally rich after-school and summer programs to traditional and non-traditional private lessons and group music classes. At the core of the Brooklyn Music Schools mission is accessibility to music and performing arts education regardless of resources or background, with the aim to make the next generation of people who love music and the arts.
Our mission is to make it possible for everyone in our community, regardless of their background and resources, to be able to experience the joy of music and the artistic and intellectual benefits of musical, dance, and dramatic performance.
Private Lessons:For over one hundred years, the Brooklyn Music School has been offering high-quality music instruction featuring a world-class international faculty; offering the best of what New York City and the world have to offer. Private lessons at the Brooklyn Music School are intended to be encouraging, fun, engaging, and detailed in preparation for performance. All classes at BMS provide a warm, supportive and nurturing environment.Outreach:BMS Outreach program is designed to bring high-quality musical education, instruments, and programming into institutions where budget cuts or lack of personnel have resulted in either no musical instruction or programs with very limited scope. Currently, the school serves 3,000 people with 20 outreach partners. The curriculum will be customized to support the needs of each institution and disciplines continue to include chorus, percussion, guitar, recorder, violin, and keyboard, as needed.ARY:BMS after school program, Arts Reaching Youth (ARY), provides children from 5-12 years old with affordable, highly engaging performing arts and music immersion. World-class teaching artists will facilitate BMS variety of instruments, vocal expression, music theater, dance, music theory, and appreciation. Financial aid is available to low-income families who need a safe, affordable and stimulating place for their children to learn.
