Organizations Filed Purposes: The Bushwick Starr is an Obie Award-winning nonprofit theater that presents an annual season of new performance works. We are an organization defined by both our artists and our community, and since 2007, we have grown into a thriving theatrical venue, a destination for exciting and engaging performance, and a vital neighborhood arts center serving the diverse artistic needs and impulses of our Bushwick, Brooklyn community. We provide a springboard for emerging professional artists to make career-defining leaps and maintain a sanctuary for established artists to experiment and innovate.

The Bushwick Starr's 2019-20 Main Stage Season included 4 out of 5 scheduled world premiere productions of: WATERBOY & THE MIGHTY WORLD by Justin Hicks + The Hawt Plates (Sept. 4-7, 2019); BLACK EXHIBITION by @GARYXXXFISHER aka Jeremy O. Harris (Nov. 6 - Dec 15., 2019); THE CONVERSATIONALISTS by James Monaco + Jerome Ellis (Jan. 8-Feb. 1, 2020); SKiNFoLK: AN AMERICAN SHOW by Jillian Walker (Feb. 26-Mar. 12, 2020, originally extended through Mar. 21 but closed early due to COVID-19). The 63 completed performances of the abbreviated 2019-20 season reached 4247 audience members. Though we were disappointed that performance schedules were cut short, we remain committed to all the artists in our season, and are proud that all completed performance runs were extended and received positive critical and popular response, and SKiNFoLK received a NYT Critic's Pick as well as Antonyo and Lilly Awards for its premiere run.We offered development opportunities through our Starr Reading Series, six works presented in free public performances prior to COVID-19 cancellations included: CHRONICLE Z by Nia O. Witherspoon, in collaboration with Linda Labeija (Nov. 24, 2019); A WALLESS CHURCH: The Black Womens Guide to Create God by AriDy Nox (Nov. 25, 2019); JAVELINA by Alexis Roblan (Dec. 8, 2019); ON THE Y-AXIS by Lucas Baisch (Dec. 9, 2019); Ghost dad (i can't die) by Nazareth Hassan (Mar. 9, 2020); The GODS PLAY by Ren Dara Santiago (Mar. 10, 2020). Two readings were postponed due to COVID-19: SORRY / NOT SORRY by Nora Srena Casey created with Nana Dakin (Scheduled for Mar. 16, 2020); WHERE DYNASTIES COME TRUE by Julia Izumi (Scheduled for Mar. 17, 2020). Micro-Residencies in FY20 were given to Kevin Armento + Jaki Bradley, Federica Borlenghi, Corinne Donly, Noah Fowler, Sanaz Ghajar, as well as a socially distanced residency with Amy Staats in late May 2020. In addition, FY20 Main Stage artists Justin Hicks, James Monaco & Jerome Ellis, Jillian Walker, and Hillary Miller each used 1-3 weeks in July/August 2019.The Starrs 2019-20 education programs included: Big Green Theater eco-playwriting course in Fall 2019/Winter 2020 at PS075, PS239, and PS106K; Creating Performance for teen members of El Puente in Summer/Fall 2019; and Shake on the Block Shakespeare adaptation workshops for middle schoolers at IS77 and Senior Storytelling for creative aging at Riseboro Ridgewood Bushwick and Round Table Senior Centers, which both pivoted to digital or phone delivery in late Spring 2020. Each education program concluded with free public performances of student work, all performances after March 2020 were delivered digitally. To respond to immediate challenges from COVID-19 in our communities, we administered the pet project grant which distributed 160 emergency grants to playwrights nationwide. We provided hundreds of care packages with PPE, food, and arts activities to Bushwick participants in our education programs. We also collaborated with Oye Group to present the Summer Arts Festival in Maria Hernandez Park, a free public event/performance on August 18, 2019 as part of the Mayors Office of Media & Entertainments Off-Broadway in the Boros program.
