CATHOLIC MIGRATION SERVICES, A NOT-FOR-PROFIT LEGAL SERVICES PROVIDER AFFILIATED WITH CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF BROOKLYN AND QUEENS AND THE ROMAN CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN, PROVIDES FREE LEGAL SERVICES AND KNOW YOUR RIGHTS EDUCATION TO LOW-INCOME INDIVIDUALS REGARDLESS OF RACE, RELIGION, ETHNICITY, NATIONAL ORIGIN, OR IMMIGRATION STATUS.WE ASSIST IMMIGRANTS WITH IMMIGRATION LEGAL SERVICES, HOUSING LEGAL SERVICES, AND IMMIGRANT WORKERS' RIGHTS LEGAL SERVICES.IN ADDITION, WE ARE COMMITTED TO COLLABORATING WITH AND SERVING THE DIVERSE ETHNIC MINISTRIES OF OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH PASTORAL SERVICES FOR IMMIGRANTS. THIS PRESERVES THE CULTURAL TRADITIONS AND HERITAGE OF OUR PEOPLE BY ENSURING ONGOING FELLOWSHIP AND SPIRITUAL GROWTH IN THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH.
IMMIGRATION SERVICES:IMMIGRATION LEGAL SERVICES PROGRAM PROVIDES A RANGE OF SERVICES, INCLUDING CONFIDENTIAL SCREENINGS FOR UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRATIONS, REUNITING FAMILIES THROUGH FAMILY BASED PETITIONS, PETITIONING FOR ASYLUM AND DEFENDING IMMIGRANTS FACING DEPORTATION. IT ALSO HOSTS OUTREACH EVENTS AND PROVIDES KNOW YOUR- RIGHTS EDUCATION. CMS PROVIDED FREE LEGAL SERVICES AND REPRESENTATION ON IMMIGRATION MATTERS TO MORE THAN 2,300 NEW YORKERS IN 2019. CMS HELPED MORE THAN 600 LAWFUL PERMANENT RESIDENTS APPLY TO BECOME U.S. CITIZENS, 130 CHILDHOOD ARRIVALS OBTAIN OR RENEW DACA STATUS, 240 UNITED STATES CITIZENS AND PERMANENT RESIDENTS OBTAIN IMMIGRATION STATUS FOR THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS AND REUNITE IN THE UNITED STATES, AND 31 IMMIGRANTS OBTAIN ASYLUM OR ADJUST THEIR STATUS BASED ON ASYLEE OR REFUGEE STATUS. OUR LAWYERS GAVE COMMUNITY PRESENTATIONS TO MORE THAN 3,300 BROOKLYN AND QUEENS RESIDENTS. THESE PRESENTATIONS INFORMED IMMIGRATIONS ABOUT CHANGES IN FEDERAL IMMIGRATION POLICY, AND WAYS TO AVOID FRAUDS AND SCAMS THAT TARGET VULNERABLE IMMIGRANTS.
HOUSING SERVICES:TENANT ADVOCACY PROGRAM (HOUSING/ITAP) PROVIDES HOUSING LEGAL SERVICES, TENANT ORGANIZING SERVICES, LEADERSHIP TRAINING, AND KNOW YOUR RIGHTS EDUCATION TO LOW INCOME TENANTS, MOST OF WHOM ARE IMMIGRANTS. CMS PROVIDES FREE LEGAL ADVICE TO MORE THAN 300 TENANTS IN 2019, THROUGH WEEKLY CLINICS HELD IN SUNNYSIDE, QUEENS. CMS PREVENTED OR DELAYED 23 EVICTIONS, ENABLING TENANTS TO STAY IN THEIR HOMES AND AVOID HOMELESSNESS. CMS HELPED 28 HOUSEHOLDS WIN CRITICALLY NECESSARY REPAIRS OF SUB-STANDARD AND HAZARDOUS HOUSING CONDITIONS. CMS HELPED 12 HOUSEHOLDS WIN MORE THAN $80,000 IN RENT REDUCTIONS AND RENT OVERCHARGE RECOVERIES. WORKING WITH A GROUP OF DEDICATED TENANT LEADERS, WE ORGANIZED QUEENS TENANTS AND SUCCESSFULLY ADVOCATED WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS FOR THE PASSAGE OF THE HOUSING STABILITY AND TENANT PROTECTION ACT OF 2019, LANDMARK LEGISLATION THAT EXPANDED THE RIGHTS OF BOTH RENT REGULATED AND NONREGULATED TENANTS THROUGHOUT NEW YORK STATE.
EMPLOYMENT SERVICES:WORKERS' RIGHTS PROGRAM (WRP) HELPS LOW INCOME WORKERS RECOVER UNPAID WAGES AND PROTECTS THEM AGAINST UNSAFE WORKINGS CONDITIONS. IT ALSO, HOST OUTREACH EVENTS AND PROVIDES KNOW- YOUR-RIGHTS EDUCATION. PROVIDED LEGAL ADVICE TO HUNDREDS OF INDIVIDUALS WHO CALLED OUR FREE BILINGUAL HOTLINE. RECOVERED MORE THAN $200,000 IN UNPAID WAGES FOR LOW- WAGE AND IMMIGRANT WORKERS. ADVOCATED TO THE KINGS COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY TO PURSUE CRIMINAL CHARGES AGAINST A SCOFFLAW EMPLOYER WHO ABUSED DOZENS OF CONSTRUCTION WORKERS AND PRESENTED KNOW-YOUR-RIGHTS TRAININGS AT CHURCHES AND COMMUNITY CENTERS.
