Organizations Filed Purposes: WITH COMMUNITY RESIDENTS LEADING THE WAY, THE MISSION OF CYPRESS HILLS LOCAL DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (CHLDC) IS TO BUILD A STRONG SUSTAINABLE CYPRESS HILLS AND EAST NEW YORK, WHERE YOUTH AND ADULTS ACHIEVE EDUCATIONAL AND ECONOMIC SUCCESS, SECURE AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND DEVELOP LEADERSHIP SKILLS TO TRANSFORM THEIR LIVES AND COMMUNITY. WE ALSO PROMOTE POLICIES THAT PROMOTE RACIAL EQUITY.

THE MISSION OF CHLDC IS TO BUILD A STRONG, EQUITABLE EAST NEW YORK BY REVITALIZING THE COMMUNITY.

YOUTH AND HUMAN SERVICES - WE SERVED 2,836 YOUNG PEOPLE IN HIGH QUALITY AFTERSCHOOL, EXTENDED LEARNING TIME AND SUMMER CAMP PROGRAMS. OUR FY20 SUMMER CAMPS WERE HELD IN-PERSON AND OUR AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS ON VIRTUAL PLATFORMS AND IN-PERSON. OUR ORGANIZATION IS SUPPORTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF LITERACY SKILLS IN THE EARLY GRADES IN OUR AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS (OUR 'READY READERS' INITIATIVE SERVED 724 CHILDREN IN FY20.) CHLDC IS ALSO USING EVIDENCE-BASED STRATEGIES TO BUILD THE SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL COMPETENCIES OF OUR YOUNG PEOPLE IN ALL OF OUR PROGRAMS. WE ENGAGED OVER 1,200 YOUTH AND ADULT RESIDENTS IN RECREATION, EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS AT THE CYPRESS HILLS/EAST NEW YORK BEACON SCHOOL-BASED COMMUNITY CENTER AND THE CYPRESS HILLS/CITYLINE BEACON CENTER. IN FY20, 2,731 YOUNG PEOPLE PARTICIPATED IN OUR EARLY COLLEGE AWARENESS ACTIVITIES, MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT SUCCESS CENTER AND OUR COLLEGE AND CAREER COUNSELING SERVICES WHICH INCLUDED RESEARCHING AND GUIDING HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE SEARCHES, COMPLETING ADMISSIONS APPLICATIONS AND ESSAYS/PORTFOLIOS AND FINANCIAL AID FORMS, JOINING IN HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE TRIPS AND MATRICULATING TO COLLEGES. THROUGH CHLDC'S COLLEGE PERSISTENCE PROGRAM WE SUPPORTED 1,377 STUDENTS IN HIGHER EDUCATION TO SECURE ACADEMIC, SOCIAL AND FINANCIAL SUPPORTS, TRANSFERS FROM COMMUNITY COLLEGES INTO FOUR YEAR UNIVERSITIES AND SUCCESS TO GRADUATION. IN ADDITION, CHLDC SET UP AN EMERGENCY SERVICES HOTLINE AT THE OUTSET OF THE GLOBAL PANDEMIC TO CONNECT RESIDENTS TO SUPPORT SERVICES AND BENEFITS. OUR ORGANIZATION COMPILED AN EMERGENCY SERVICES GUIDE AND WE WERE ABLE TO WORK WITH FOUR FOOD PANTRIES TO FEED 4,128 INDIVIDUALS, DISTRIBUTED SUPERMARKET GIFT CARDS TO 162 FAMILIES WHICH INCLUDED 739 INDIVIUDAL, MADE FOOD DELIVERIES TO OUR SENIOR RESIDENTS AND ASSISTED THEM IN ENROLLING IN NYC'S EMERGENCY FEEDING PROGRAMS, AND HELPED 11 RESIDENTS SECURE GRANTS FOR EMERGENCY NEEDS, E.G. FUNERAL EXPENSES. WE DID THOUSANDS OF HEALTH & WELLNESS CALLS TO FAMILIES ENROLLED IN OUR PROGRAMS, TENANTS IN OUR BUILDINGS AND DOOR TO DOOR OUTREACH TO SMALL BUSINESSES TO HELP THEM ACCESS LOANS AND GRANTS TO SURVIVE.

HOUSING AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT - OUR ORGANIZATION BROKE GROUND ON OUR BIGGEST AFFORDABLE HOUSING/MIXED USED DEVELOPMENT: CHESTNUT COMMONS. WORKING WITH CO-VENTURE PARTNERS, WE ARE BUILDING 274 UNITS OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING, NEIGHBORHOOD RETAIL SHOPS AND A COMMUNITY CENTER WHICH OUR ORGANIZATION WILL OPERATE. WE ALSO COMMENCED AND CONTINUED PRE-DEVELOPMENT WORK ON SEVERAL OTHER REHAB PROJECTS AND GROUND UP NEW CONSTRUCTION. WE ASSISTED 29 HOMEOWNERS TO PREVENT MORTGAGE FORECLOSURE AND WORKED WITH 67 TENANTS TO SECURE APARTMENT REPAIRS, AVOID EVICTION AND OBTAIN RENTER BENEFITS. LAST YEAR 1,052 RESIDENTS BENEFITED FROM OUR YOUTH FARMERS' MARKET AND ANOTHER 220 FAMILIES WERE HELPED TO APPLY FOR AND RETAIN SNAP BENEFITS.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZING - CHLDC SERVED 854 TEENAGERS AND YOUNG ADULTS IN THE SUMMER OF 2019 THROUGH THE SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM, 97 YOUNG PEOPLE THROUGH THE WORK, LEARN AND GROW PROGRAM AND GAVE LOW INCOME YOUNG PEOPLE A MEANINGFUL FIRST WORK EXPERIENCE. 238 YOUNG ADULTS PARTICIPATED IN OUR JOB TRAINING AND INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS. THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY WE MOBILIZED RESIDENTS TO EXPRESS THEIR VIEWS ON LAND USE AND PUBLIC POLICY ISSUES RELATING TO A MAJOR REZONING OF THE COMMUNITY, AND ENGAGED YOUNG PEOPLE IN ADVOCACY RELATING TO ENDING THE SCHOOL TO PRISON PIPELINE.
