Organizations Filed Purposes: To inspire and nurture leaders for peace & justice.

El Puente is a community human rights institution that promotes leadership for peace and justice through the engagement of members (youth and adult) in the arts, education, scientific research, wellness and environmental action.

Community SchoolsEl Puente Community School serves all MS50 students (~325 students) through the utilization of the community school strategy to create universal supports and enrichment activities, and will provide targeted/intensive services to students (and their families) who fall in one or more of the following categories: Are chronically absent from school Are chronically late to school Are frequently cited for behavioral infractions and/or suspensions Are new immigrants/English Language Learners (ELLs) who need cultural, as well as academic transition, supportAttendance improvement activities will be based on qualitative/quantitative data and approach rooted in community & family connectedness (ex. 1-on-1 students and/or family mentoring, home visits, parent conferences, incentive programs). We currently serve 60 students throughout the Success Mentoring program that specifically target chronically late and absent students. We have seen our school yearly attendance rise from 89% to 93% and chronically absenteeism reduced by half. Family Engagement activities will support MS50 staff in creating authentic relationships with their students families as decision-making partners, through educational/vocational workshops, family support services, & culturally/linguistically relevant enrichment programming. We will also have leadership development sessions to prepare parents to take on leadership roles through the PTA and School Leadership Team, as well as workshops for parents, to include: fitness, nutrition & wellness, ESL/GED and job training/skill building. About 80% of our parents have attended at least 1 workshop, event and/or programming in the past year. Academic Support activities include the implementation of El Puentes Integrated Arts Project model, a dynamic, in-depth learning process that brings teachers and teaching artists together in collaborative partnership to create integrated academic experiences around a central theme, vision, or community issue to motivate academic engagement and achievement. This model has been tailored in the past few years to support MS50s English Language Learners and students with special needs. Our DRP scores that test reading comprehension show that we outperformed the national average as well as other MSQI schools for all grades. The math state test data showed that we also performed close to the city average. Every year, our academic achievement continues to show gains. The Community School strategy is embedded in all facets of school programming and structures including school culture, college programming, and student leadership. Other highlights include our work to shift school culture to be more culturally relevant for students; college visits & programming for all students and a robust student government with 50 members. BeaconEl Puente Beacon is a pre-professional art and sports program that primarily serves elementary, middle school and high school youth. Through this year, the program has served 150 young people and counting under that core demographic with classes in Vocal, Theater, Visual Arts, Afro- Caribbean & Jazz Dance, and basketball technique. Young people participated in three culminating events last semester that were attended by GLD/LCANClimate Walk Puerto Rico In the Face of Climate Change- the climate walk, La Caminata, is our annual educational signature event. We use it to create awareness as well as mobilize people to take action in mitigating and adapting of the impact of climate change in Puerto Rico and given the aftermath of the hurricanes. Over 2,000 people attended our 2nd climate walk in 2018. . La Caminata occured on September 22nd on the anniversary of the passing of Hurricane Maria. The climate walk took place in Puerto Ricos capital of San Juan. It not only brought community groups, univisersities, churches from all over the Island together to stand for climate justice but also integrated more groups in the diaspora taking action in their communities in support of the Puerto Rico. The WEPA! Festival-is an annual street festival co-organized by El Puentes Green Light District and the NYC Department of Transportation?s Weekend Walks program. On Saturday, September 29th, 2018, Havemeyer Street was closed to traffic -between S. 4th and Grand Streets- and filled with cultural activities, health & wellness workshops, and environmental justice information & resources, as well as a spectacular lineup of performing artists from El Puentes C.A.D.R.E. network (Community Artists Development and Resource Exchange), visiting artists, and El Puente youth performers.
