OUR MISSION IS TO TRANSFORM THE JUSTICE SYSTEM BY PROMOTING RESPONSES TO VIOLENCE THAT BREAK CYCLES OF TRAUMA. WE WORK AT THE INTERSECTION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, PUBLIC HEALTH, AND RACIAL JUSTICE TO ELEVATE HEALING AND SAFETY OVER RETRIBUTION, ADVANCE RACIAL EQUITY, AND MEET THE NEEDS OF SURVIVORS.

DEATH PENALTY PROGRAMPROVIDED THOUSANDS OF HOURS OF FREE CONSULTING, CAPACITY BUILDING, AND ORGANIZING SUPPORT TO APPROXIMATELY 24 LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY WORKING TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THE INJUSTICE OF THE DEATH PENALTY. OUR ASSISTANCE INCLUDED DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS, TRAINING OF ORGANIZERS AND VOLUNTEERS, STRATEGIC PLANNING, BOARD AND ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, ASSISTANCE WITH OUTREACH TO KEY CONSTITUENCIES, MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS SUPPORT, AND OTHER ADVISING. NATIONALLY, WE CONTINUED OUR OUTREACH TO CONSERVATIVES, EVANGELICALS, AND UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES BY SPEAKING AT APPROXIMATELY EIGHT NATIONAL CONFERENCES, DEVELOPING EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS, CONDUCTING TRAININGS, AND SPARKING MORE THAN 900 MEDIA STORIES ABOUT THE FLAWS OF THE DEATH PENALTY.
POLICE COMMUNITY TRAUMA PROGRAMEJUSA USES ORGANIZING, ADVOCACY, AND TRAININGS TO INCREASE HEALING AND REDUCE VIOLENCE IN CITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY, INCLUDING BETWEEN POLICE AND RESIDENTS. THIS YEAR WE WORKED IN SIX CITIES (NEWARK, NJ, BATON ROUGE, LA, MINNEAPOLIS, MN, OAKLAND, CA, HOUSTON, TX, AND RAPID CITY, SD) TO STRENGTHEN LOCAL HEALING AND ANTI-VIOLENCE ORGANIZATIONS AND ASSIST COMMUNITY GROUPS AND POLICE DEPARTMENTS TO UNDERSTAND AND ADDRESS THE IMPACT OF TRAUMA. HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE: BROUGHT TOGETHER 78 POLICE OFFICERS AND 71 COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN NEWARK, NJ FOR TRAUMA TRAININGS TO BUILD TRUST, AIR CONCERNS, AND TOGETHER ENVISION A MORE COLLABORATIVE RELATIONSHIP; ORGANIZED A DELEGATION OF BATON ROUGE ORGANIZATIONS COMING TO NEWARK, NJ TO LEARN ABOUT TRAUMA INFORMED RESPONSES TO VIOLENCE; HOSTED COMMUNITY LISTENING SESSIONS AND LEARNING DELEGATIONS FOR COMMUNITY GROUPS TO SHARE PEER SUPPORT ACROSS CITIES; AND PROVIDED CAPACITY BUILDING AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO SEVERAL HEALING SERVICES ORGANIZATIONS LED BY AND SERVING CRIME SURVIVORS OF COLOR. THIS HELP INCLUDED TRAINING, COACHING, PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT, GRANT WRITING, DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS, TRAINING OF ORGANIZERS AND VOLUNTEERS, AND MORE. TO DATE WE'VE DRIVEN OVER $4M IN GRANTS TOWARDS THESE LIFE-SAVING ORGANIZATIONS.
NARRATIVE SHIFTING PROGRAM THIS NATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAM WORKS TO CHANGE FALSE NARRATIVES ABOUT VIOLENCE, RACE, AND TRAUMA WHILE LIFTING UP THE EFFECTIVENESS OF COMMUNITY-CENTERED, TRAUMA-INFORMED RESPONSES TO VIOLENCE THAT CENTER THE HEALING AND WELL-BEING OF THE MOST IMPACTED COMMUNITIES. THIS INFORMATION IS DELIVERED THROUGH PRESENTATIONS, MEDIA INTERVIEWS, MATERIALS, AND ONLINE. IN 2019, WE PUBLISHED A REPORT PROFILING FIVE MEMBERS OF OUR TRAUMA AND HEALING NETWORK - A NATIONAL GROUP OF TRAUMA SURVIVORS INCLUDING CRIME SURVIVORS, FORMERLY INCARCERATED PEOPLE, FAMILIES OF THE INCARCERATED, AND LAW ENFORCEMENT. WE ORGANIZED A DIGITAL CAMPAIGN TO LIFT THE VOICES OF CRIME SURVIVORS OF COLOR DURING NATIONAL CRIME VICTIMS RIGHTS WEEK, AND WE PROVIDED ONGOING CAPACITY BUILDING SUPPORT TO GROUP MEMBERS ORGANIZATIONS. A NUMBER OF NETWORK MEMBERS WERE FEATURED IN THE MEDIA THIS YEAR, AND THREE NETWORK MEMBERS RECEIVED NEW FUNDING WITH EJUSA'S SUPPORT.
