THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN DIASPORAN ARTS (MOCADA)IS DEVOTED TO UTILIZING THE VISUAL ARTS AS A MEDIUM TO ADDRESS, DISCUSS AND DEBATE CONTEMPORARY SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC ISSUES IMPACTING PEOPLE OF THE AFRICAN DIASPORA THROUGH THE CREATION OF INNOVATIVE EXHIBITIONS, PUBLIC PROGRAMS AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH INITIATIVES. AS THE FIRST AND ONLY BLACK ART MUSEUM IN BROOKLYN, MOCADA SERVES ONE OF THE LARGEST POPULATIONS OF PEOPLE OF AFRICAN DESCENT IN THE UNITED STATES.
MOCADA ORGANIZES THREE-FOUR EXHIBITIONS PER YEAR OF EMERGING, MID CAREER, AND ESTABLISHED ARTISTS WHOSE WORK REPRESENTS THE ART AND CULTURE OF THE AFRICAN DIASPORA. THE STRENGTH OF MOCADA'S GUEST CURATORS PROGRAM HAS RESULTED IN AN INNOVATIVE LINE-UP OF SHOWS FOR THE MAIN GALLERY, AND NEW RELATIONSHIPS WITH EMERGING AND TALENTED CURATORS AND ARTISTS. COMMUNITY PROGRAMS AT MOCADA BRING THE ARTS TO THE PEOPLE, RIGHT WHERE THEY ARE. THE MUSEUM SPACE SERVES AS AN IMPORTANT HUB FOR CONNECTION AND PRESENTATION, AND A PHYSICAL ARCHIVE OF THE GENERATIVE IMPACT OF BLACK ARTS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, BOROUGH, CITY, AND BEYOND. AS ONE OF NYC'S LEADING BLACK ARTS ORGANIZATIONS, MOCADA USES COMMUNITY PROGRAMS TO SHIFT THE RACIAL AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC CLASS BARRIERS THAT PERMEATE GENTRIFYING COMMUNITIES. MANY IN MOCADA'S CORE AUDIENCE FACE EDUCATIONAL, ECONOMIC AND EXPOSURE BARRIERS PREVENTING THEM FROM MAKING IT THROUGH THE MUSEUM'S DOOR. COMMUNITY PROGRAMS ARE A CRITICAL TOOL FOR ACHIEVING MOCADA'S MISSIONS OF ENGAGING WITH PEOPLE ACROSS SOCIAL DIVIDES, AND WELCOMING THOSE WHO ARE SYSTEMATICALLY LEFT OUT. MOCADA'S COMMUNITY PROGRAMS INCLUDE THE PUBLIC EXCHANGE SERIES, SOUL OF BK FESTIVAL AND THE KIDFLIX FILM FEST OF BED-STUY.
