IT WAS THE SITE OF THE LARGEST BATTLE OF THE AMERICAN REVOLTIONARY WAR, AND IS PART OF THE HISTORIC HOUSE TRUST OF NEW YORK CITY.
IN THE PAST DECADE, THE ORGANIZATION HAS OVERSEEN NEARLY 10 MILLION IN RENOVATIONS TO BOTH THE PARK AND THE HOUSE, INCLUDING: A NEW FAMILY-FRIENDLY PERMANENT EXHIBIT, "OLD STONE HOUSE: WITNESS TO WAR" ABOUT LIFE IN 18TH CENTURY BROOKLYN, NY, FOCUSED ON THE AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA FROM 1776 THROUGH 1783. SUPPORTING 1.5 ACRES OF NATIVE AND USEFUL PLANT GARDENS AND A 6-BIN COMPOST SYSTEM TO CREATE A SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPE. THE INSTALLATION OF SEVEN NEW BASKETBALL COURTS, 5 HANDBALL COURTS, A SKATE PARK, A DOG RUN AND SYNTHETIC TURF RECREATION FIELD. THE MISSION FULFILLMENT IS ACHIEVED BY ANY ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING: EDUCATING STUDENTS THROUGH AN ACTIVE LEARNING CURRICULUM FOCUSED ON THE "BATTLE OF BROOKLYN," BROOKLYN'S DUTCH COLONIAL ERA, AND THE ENVIRONMENT. STEWARDING WASHINGTON PARK/ J. J. BYRNE PLAYGROUND THROUGH PUBLIC PROGRAMS AND PARK MAINTENANCE. PARTNERING WITH FRIENDS' GROUPS TO PROVIDE ACTIVE RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES IN THE PARK. ENCOURAGING CIVIC ENGAGEMENT BY PROVIDING AN ENVIRONMENT FOR COMMUNITY MEETINGS, PARTICIPATORY BUDGETING AND OTHER ACTIVITIES THAT HELP CREATE A RELEVANT LINK TO OUR REVOLUTIONARY-ERA PAST. OFFERING CULTURAL EVENTS PROGRAMMING AND CONTEMPORARY ART EXHIBITS TO MEET THE NEEDS AND INTERESTS OF OUR DIVERSE COMMUNITY, AND TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THE OLD STONE HOUSE AS A HUB FOR PUBLIC HISTORY.
