Senior Planet is the brand name for the award-winning membership experience throughwhich OATS engages a diverse array of older adults. Through their active participation in the world-class programming that OATS delivers in a variety of settings and formats, and their collective commitment to Aging with Attitude, Senior Planet members undergo measurable changes in outlook and behavior that produce outcomes in specific dimensions of life: increased social connection, improved health, greater financial security, more active participation as citizens and advocates, and access to new pathways to creativity. In 2019, Senior Planet had over 4,200 active members taking part in in-person programs across six different states, and more than 1.4 million unique visitors to the newly re-designed SeniorPlanet.org, which offers online learning opportunities and a wealth of high-quality feature articles focusing on how seniors can use technology to make life better. Overall membership grew by 23 percent in 2019, with over 680 five- and ten-week training courses and 140 other program offerings, including lectures, workshops, and special events. In addition to programs offered at its four Senior Planet Centers, OATS delivered services at over 165 partner sitelocations in 2019. OATS expanded its Senior Planet programs in San Antonio, Texas, with a special focus on improving social connection (as a social determinant of health), and in Colorado, where OATS opened a brand new 3,000 square foot Senior Planet Center in the Lowry area of Denver, and extended programs to rural areas of the state. In addition, OATS established and runs a new Senior Planet Center in California, which is located within the flagship facility of Avenidas, a large and respected senior services provider located in Palo Alto. OATS also continued to run thriving Senior Planet programming in Montgomery county, Maryland, the North Country region of New York State, and all across New York City, where OATS operates the original Senior Planet Center in Manhattan.OATS is dedicated to measuring the impact that Senior Planet has on the lives of the older adults who participate in its courses and other programs. In 2018 OATS introduced a robust set of program impact survey instruments, developed in collaboration with faculty from Cornell and Columbia Universities. The instruments are administered pre- and post- to all Senior Planet course participants, and there is a separate survey for each of the five OATS impact areas (social engagement, health and wellness, etc.). Some 2019 impact highlights for older adults, resulting from their taking a Senior Planet course in 2019 include: 72 percent felt betterequipped to live independently, 76 percent felt more socially connected, 39 percent reported better health, including losing weight and sleeping more soundly, and 75 percent were now more optimistic about the future.Thought Leadership: In addition to providing world-class technology-enabled services to older adults in-person and online, OATS advances its mission to change the way we age by taking a leadership role in advocacy, policy development, and broader efforts to inform public, corporate, philanthropic, and academic stakeholders and to engage them in cross-sector dialogue. OATS founder and executive director Tom Kamber PhD is a nationally-recognized leader in the field of aging and technology who publishes and speaks widely on policy matters and innovative approaches to harnessing the power of technology to improve the experience of aging.A sample of such activities in 2019 includes:Receiving a patent for the Tech Spot - a modular cabinet assembly that stores and provides technology in a convenient package that can be installed easily at any community setting, such as a senior center or library.
