POWERHOUSE ARTS IS A NOT-FOR-PROFIT BASED IN GOWANUS AND RED HOOK, BROOKLYN, ESTABLISHED TO CREATE A ROBUST PLATFORM FOR ART PRODUCTION AND EMPLOYMENT IN THE ARTS. POWERHOUSE IS STEWARDING THE REDEVELOPMENT OF THE FORMER BROOKLYN RAPID TRANSIT POWER STATION IN GOWANUS TO CREATE A NEW FACILITY THAT WILL HOUSE FABRICATION AND PRODUCTION FACILITIES IN WOOD, METAL, CERAMIC, TEXTILES AND PRINT. OUR PROGRAMMING INCLUDES EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT AND PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT TO INCREASE ACCESS AND OPPORTUNITY FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE ARTS FOR ALL NEW YORKERS.
COLLABORATIVE PRODUCTION PROGRAMTHROUGH THIS PROGRAM, POWERHOUSE ARTS WORKS COLLABORATIVELY WITH ARTISTS ON PROJECTS AT ALL STAGES - FROM CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT TO PROJECT EXECUTION TO INSTALLATION. POWERHOUSE SPECIALIZES IN WOOD, METAL, CERAMIC, TEXTILE AND PRINT. COLLABORATIVE PRODUCTION EXPERIENCED SIGNIFICANT GROWTH IN THE PAST YEAR, INCLUDING OPENING THE WOOD, METAL, AND CERAMIC SHOPS. THE TEAM TOOK ON A WIDE SCOPE OF PROJECTS, INCLUDING COLLABORATIVE WORK BETWEEN SHOPS, PROJECTS WITH OUR ARTISTS COUNCIL, AND TEAM-WIDE EFFORTS TO CREATE MASKS.
EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT, AND ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMTHROUGH THIS PROGRAM, POWERHOUSE ARTS CREATES OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADULTS AND YOUTH ALIKE TO ENGAGE WITH THE ORGANIZATION THROUGH ART-MAKING AND SKILL-BUILDING CLASSES, AND BY PARTICIPATING IN ONLINE AND IN-PERSON EVENTS AND GATHERINGS. POWERHOUSE INCREASED OUR SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS, WHICH CONNECT NYC PUBLIC MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS WITH INDUSTRY PARTNERS TO LEARN ARTS FABRICATION SKILLS; OFFERED EXTERNSHIPS TO NYC PUBLIC EDUCATORS AND CLASSROOM ART TEACHERS; CREATED A FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM FOR PRACTICING ARTISTS WITH ADVANCED TECHNICAL PROFICIENCY TO BOTH LEARN FROM AND TEACH NEW TECHNIQUES IN A SYMBIOTIC EXCHANGE WITH OUR TEAM; AND CONTINUED TO GROW OUR PAID INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR BOTH ADULTS AND YOUTH.
INDEPENDENT PRODUCTION PROGRAMPOWERHOUSE ARTS CONTINUED TO ADVANCE PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT OF AN INDEPENDENT PRODUCTION PROGRAM, WHICH WILL PROVIDE ACCESS TO OUR WORKSHOP SPACES IN WOOD, METAL, DIGITAL FABRICATION, PRINTMAKING, TEXTILES, AND CERAMICS, IN THE FUTURE POWERHOUSE ARTS FACILITY. THESE SHOPS WILL OFFER A RANGE OF EQUIPMENT AND CAPABILITIES IN EACH MATERIAL. MEMBERSHIP TO THE INDEPENDENT PRODUCTION PROGRAM WILL PROVIDE FLEXIBLE ACCESS TO MEMBERS-ONLY WORKSHOP FACILITIES TO THOSE WHO HAVE DEMONSTRATED THE ABILITY TO WORK INDEPENDENTLY AND SAFELY.
