POWERPLAY NYC CREATES OPPORTUNITIES FOR GIRLS AGE 8-18 BY PARTNERING WITH SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY BASED ORGANIZATIONS TO CONDUCT AFTER-SCHOOL AND SUMMER PROGRAMS EMPHASIZING PHYSICAL FITNESS AND EDUCATION. USING SPORTS AS OUR HOOK, WE BUILD GIRLS' CONFIDENCE AND RESILIENCY FROM THE INSIDE-OUT AND CREATE SAFE SPACES WHERE GIRLS LEARN FROM EACH OTHER AND FROM STRONG FEMALE ROLE MODELS.OUR WORK FOCUSES ON YOUNG WOMEN OF COLOR LIVING IN POVERTY WHO ARE AMONG NYC'S MOST VULNERABLE POPULATIONS. POWERPLAY PROGRAMMING IS OFFERED IN ALL FIVE BOROUGHS AND IS CONCENTRATED IN LOW-INCOME, UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES AND IN TITLE 1-FUNDED PUBLIC SCHOOLS. POWERPLAY CURRENTLY SERVES OVER 1,800 GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN IN 35 SITES ACROSS NYC; 98% OF OUR PARTICIPANTS ARE GIRLS OF COLOR AND OVER 90% RECEIVE FREE LUNCH IN SCHOOL. OUR PROGRAMS FOR GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN HELP TO FILL THE GAP THROUGH A CONTINUUM OF SERVICES BEGINNING WITH GIRLS AS YOUNG AS SIX AND INTENSIFYING AS GIRLS MATURE.
POWERPLAY NYC OFFERS THE STAR SERIES AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM WHICH PROVIDES SPORTS, RECREATION, AND HEALTHY LIVING ACTIVITIES FOR GIRLS DURING AFTER-SCHOOL HOURS AND ON THE WEEKENDS; THE SUPERSTARS LEADERSHIP ACADEMY FOR HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS OFFERING SPORTS, COLLEGE PREPARATION, AND CAREER ADVANCEMENT ACTIVITIES; AND THE RISINGSTARS LEADERSHIP ACADEMY FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS OFFERING SPORTS, HEALTHY LIVING, AND HIGH SCHOOL READINESS. THE YEAR 94% OF THE HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS IN OUR SUPERSTARS LEADERSHIP ACADEMY (SSLA) MADE GAINS IN AT LEAST THREE OF SIX SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL) CAPACITIES; 85% OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOL-AGED GIRLS IN OUR RISINGSTARS ACADEMY (RSA) MADE GAINS IN AT LEAST THREE OF THE SAME SEL CAPACITIES; 97% OF OUR STARS SERIES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL YOUTH MADE GAINS IN ALL FIVE SEL SKILLS.
