Organizations Filed Purposes:
Providence House serves and advocates for women and families at risk of harm, who have histories of homelessness or justice-involvement, and provides a safe community where their dignity is recognized, strengths are enhanced and a transition to stability is achieved.
Provide shelter and support to homeless, abused and formerly incarcerated women and their children
Single-mother families in the homeless system are housed in two transitional shelters and one transitional apartment building in New York City, as well as one transitional shelter in Westchester County. In addition to providing food and shelter, these programs help the women identify and overcome barriers to success, stabilize their families and improve their well-being, find and keep gainful employment, and ultimately live independently in the community. During fiscal 2019, 290 women and children were served in these safe, dignified, gender-responsive, and trauma-sensitive environments. Providence House also received donated services amounting to $150,000.
Providence House operates two permanent supportive housing sites in Brooklyn. The two buildings offer private apartments for individuals and families who have struggled with chronic homelessness, mental illness, chemical dependence, or other barriers to stability. A number of units are also available as affordable rentals for members of the community who meet income guidelines. Social work and case management services are available on-site, as are a number of community-building, social, and recreational events. In fiscal 2019, 74 people resided in the two supportive housing facilities.
In fiscal 2019, Providence House continued its new program model to serve women who would otherwise be detained at New York City's Rikers Island jail while awaiting their trial dates. The Women's Justice Project (WJP) is an alternative-to-detention initiative offering 15 beds and intensive one-on-one services for women referred from city courts. 32 women were served through this effort in fiscal 2019.
