THE MISSION OF THE RAINFOREST FOUNDATION IS TO SUPPORT INDIGENOUS AND TRADITIONAL PEOPLES OF THE WORLD'S RAINFORESTS IN THEIR EFFORTS TO PROTECT THEIR ENVIRONMENT AND FULFILL THEIR RIGHTS BY ASSISTING THEM IN:SECURING AND CONTROLLING THE NATURAL RESOURCES NECESSARY FOR THEIR LONG TERM WELL BEING AND MANAGING THESE RESOURCES IN WAYS WHICH DO NOT HARM THEIR ENVIRONMENT, VIOLATE THEIR CULTURE OR COMPROMISE THEIR FUTURE; ANDDEVELOPING THE MEANS TO PROTECT THEIR INDIVIDUAL AND COLLECTIVE RIGHTS AND TO OBTAIN, SHAPE AND CONTROL BASIC SERVICES FROM THE STATE.
THE RAINFOREST FOUNDATION US PROVIDES FINANCIAL AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT TO INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES AND ORGANIZATIONS TO SECURE THEIR RIGHTS TO THEIR TRADITIONAL LANDS AND PROTECT THEIR FORESTS AND LIVELIHOODS. WE ARE TACKLING THE WORLD'S MOST URGENT CHALLENGES: BIODIVERSITY LOSS, CLIMATE CHANGE, AND HUMAN RIGHTS.
RAINFOREST FOUNDATION US'S PROGRAMS ARE TACKLING THE WORLD'S MOST URGENT CHALLENGES: BIODIVERSITY LOSS, CLIMATE CHANGE, AND HUMAN RIGHTS. WE PARTNER WITH INDIGENOUS PEOPLES TO PROTECT VITAL RAINFOREST ECOSYSTEMS AND ADDRESS THE CLIMATE CRISIS. WE PROVIDE FINANCIAL AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT TO INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES AND ORGANIZATIONS TO SECURE THEIR RIGHTS TO THEIR TRADITIONAL LANDS AND PROTECT THEIR FORESTS AND LIVELIHOODS. OUR PROGRAMS FOCUS ON CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA, AND IN 2019 WE PRIORITIZED THE COUNTRIES OF GUYANA, PANAMA, PERU AND BRAZIL.OUR PROGRAMS FOCUS ON DELIVERING THE FOLLOWING FIVE SERVICES:TERRITORIAL MONITORING: RFUS PROVIDES TRAINING, TOOLS AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO INDIGENOUS ORGANIZATIONS TO MAP, MONITOR, AND SECURE THEIR TERRITORIES USING COST EFFECTIVE TECHNOLOGY LIKE SMARTPHONES, DRONES AND SATELLITE DATA. LAND TITLING & LEGAL INTERVENTION: RFUS WORKS WITH INDIGENOUS PEOPLES TO OBTAIN LEGAL REPRESENTATION TO SECURE LAND RIGHTS, SETTLE DISPUTES, AND SEEK JUSTICE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS PERPETRATED AGAINST ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENDERS. LAND MANAGEMENT: RFUS ADVISES COMMUNITIES TO BUILD PARTICIPATORY, BOTTOM-UP LAND MANAGEMENT PLANS TO PROTECT THEIR FORESTS AND TO SET THE STAGE FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS THAT RESPECT THEIR VALUES, BELIEFS, AND WAYS OF LIFE. POLICY & ADVOCACY: RFUS SUPPORTS PARTNERS TO ADVOCATE FOR REGIONAL, NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL POLICY CHANGE AS IT RELATES TO INDIGENOUS PEOPLES' RIGHTS, FOREST PROTECTION AND RESTORATION, NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT, CLIMATE ACTION, AND BIODIVERSITY PRESERVATION.INSTITUTIONAL STRENGTHENING: RFUS INVESTS DIRECTLY IN INDIGENOUS PEOPLES ORGANIZATIONS AND PARTNERS WITH THEM TO STRENGTHEN INTEGRAL COMMUNICATIONS, ADMINISTRATIVE, MANAGEMENT AND FINANCIAL CAPACITIES.
