Organizations Filed Purposes: Steve's Camp at Horizon Farms (SCHF) is a non-for-profit organization dedicated to providing a unique summer camp experience to underserved New York City youth. Programming at the camp is focused on giving urban youth opportunities to experience a new environment, explore their potential, and develop new skills that will empower them to live more sustainable lives. SCHF introduces youth facing poverty, gang violence, and a dearth of support services to healthy living, environmental stewardship, and leadership development through an array of enriching activities.

STEVE'S CAMP AT HORIZON FARMS IS A NON-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO PROVIDING A UNIQUE SUMMER CAMP EXPERIENCE TO UNDERSERVED NEW YORK CITY YOUTH.

SCHF focuses on three areas:Healthy Living: Steve's Camp introduces urban youth to healthy outdoor activities such as horseback riding, canoeing, and hiking in order to expose participants to activities they may not engage in at home. Campers begin each day with an hour of activity (yoga, capoeira, hiking, etc), and go on to spend up to five hours each day engaged in various recreational activities. Camp discussions and other activities take place primarily outside, meaning campers spend the majority of their days outdoors. We also take advantage of the abundance of fresh foods on the farm to expose campers to new foods, and teach them about balanced nutrition and basic meal preparation. Over the course the session, each camper helps prepare four meals, spending approximately five hours learning techniques and nutritional guidelines from a professional cook and a nutrition specialist. Campers also participate in at least one 3-hour cooking class that concentrates on recreating a more sustainable lifestyle at home. Environmental Stewardship: For many campers, the time at Steve's Camp is their first experience in a natural environment. Working outdoors gives them an opportunity to engage directly with animals and plants, and to see natural systems and life sciences in action. Campers work outdoors 9 out of 12 days, for three hours per day. Outdoor work is led by instructors in three areas: the farm, the pond, and 80 acres of wilderness. In each area, campers receive hands-on, project-based instruction, and are then asked to reflect on their work and its importance.Leadership Development: Self-esteem is a key factor in building leadership skills teens need to learn about themselves and understand their own strengths in order to set goals and make positive contributions to their communities. Steve's Camp promotes positive self-esteem, self-knowledge, teamwork, and community building by hosting a ropes course and daily dialogue groups. For 7 days of the camp session, first-year campers spend an hour per day on a ropes course that challenges them to listen to each other, solve problems as a group, and share in collective frustrations and accomplishments. Campers reflect on these experiences in hour-long dialogue groups facilitated by two counselors. Each dialogue group offers campers opportunities to discuss the challenges they faced and how campers' individual strengths helped them succeed. Discussions also encourage campers to explore the question "Who is the real me?" and think about how they can best incorporate "the real me" into their non-camp lives.
