Organizations Filed Purposes:
To create and share programs for public space in NYC that improve the urban environment, strengthen neighborhoods, and bring New Yorkers together. We also send programming kits around the world so that others can do the same.
Programming NYC public space: 65 days of programming in parks, plazas, and other public spaces of NYC, using pop-up, portable, programmatic environments, and equipment (e.g. a reading room, building station, obstacle course, chalk tools, art studio, and homework hub-all open-air) of our own creation. Each provided complete with special activities, high-quality materials, and staff to manage. Served approximately 3,000 people in 15 locations in 13 neighborhoods of the city (58% of time spent in low/moderate-income areas). Many hundreds more observed the programs in passing. Surveys and other feedback suggested that we made people feel safer and more connected to their neighbors; made people feel good about themselves, their community, and the city. All was in response to requests from community groups and city agencies. To achieve this level of service, we relied on five P-T staff to help run our programs on the street. We also had 13 volunteers-mostly teens. We enhanced our programs by contracting or providing stipends to five artists and visiting experts.
Programming public space in NYC and around the world by making kits for others: Three programming kits provided to other nonprofit organizations and government entities for a fee as follows: Fresh Air Fund, NY; Newcastle Library, NSW Australia; Lake Central School Corp, IN.
Program development: development of two new public programs for the streets called PLAY and Street Marker, and special collaborations with the Queens Museum and The Drawing Center.
