THE HUDSON VALLEY SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL ENGAGES THE WIDEST POSSIBLE AUDIENCE IN A FRESH CONVERSATION ABOUT WHAT IS ESSENTIAL IN SHAKESPEARE'S PLAYS. OUR THEATER LIVES IN THE HERE AND NOW, AT THE INTERSECTION BETWEEN THE VIRTUOSITY OF THE ACTOR, THE IMAGINATION OF THE AUDIENCE, AND THE INSPIRATION OF THE TEXT.
THE HUDSON VALLEY SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL ENGAGES THE WIDEST POSSIBLE AUDIENCE IN A FRESH CONVERSATION ABOUT WHAT IS ESSENTIAL IN SHAKESPEARE'S PLAYS.AT THE END OF 2019, THE HVSF BOARD OF DIRECTORS AGREED TO ACCEPT AN INCREDIBLY GENEROUS OFFER OF A GIFT OF PROPERTY TO ESTABLISH ITS FIRST EVER PERMANENT HOME. WHILE THIS GIFT IS STILL IN PROCESS, THE HVSF INSTIGATED A CAPITAL CAMPAIGN TO HELP FUND ITS MOVE ALONG WITH THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF NEW FACILITIES ON THE SITE. AS OF DECEMBER 31, 2019, $1.5M HAS BEEN PLEDGED TOWARDS THE CAMPAIGN.
HVSF MAKES ITS HOME UNDER A CUSTOM DESIGNED, 540-SEAT, OPEN-AIR TENT THEATER ON THE GROUNDS OF HISTORIC BOSCOBEL HOUSE AND GARDENS ON THE BANKS OF THE HUDSON RIVER. IN 2019, HVSF PRESENTED FOUR SHOWS IN REPERTORY - SHAKESPEARE'S "CYMBELINE," DIRECTED BY HVSF ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, DAVIS MCCALLUM; SHAKESPEARE'S "MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING," DIRECTED BY MAY ADRALES; THE NEW YORK PREMIERE OF A NEW ADAPTATION OF "CYRANO DE BERGERAC" CALLED "CYRANO" BY JASON O'CONNELL AND BRENDA WITHERS DIRECTED BY MEREDITH MCDONOUGH, AND HVSF'S FIRST EVER MUSICAL PRODUCTION "INTO THE WOODS" WITH MUSIC AND LYRICS BY STEPHEN SONDHEIM AND BOOK BY JAMES LAPINE DIRECTED BY JENN THOMPSON.
THIS WAS THE 25TH YEAR OF HVSF'S WELL-ESTABLISHED AND HIGHLY REGARDED EDUCATION PROGRAM, WHICH REACHED OVER 50,000 STUDENTS AT OVER 60 SCHOOLS IN THE TRI-STATE AREA IN 2019. IT OFFERED A DIVERSE RANGE OF IN-SCHOOL PROGRAMS AND WORKSHOPS, A FULLY-STAGED, 90-MINUTE TOURING PRODUCTION OF SHAKESPEARE'S "JULIUS CAESAR" DIRECTED BY ILANA STEIN FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, AS WELL AS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS, PRE-PERFORMANCE OUTREACH ACTIVITIES, AND POST-PERFORMANCE TALKBACKS. "JULIUS CAESAR" WAS REMOUNTED IN THE SUMMER OF 2019 TO TOUR TO VENUES THROUGHOUT THE REGION, EXPANDING THE REACH AND AUDIENCE FOR THIS PROGRAM.
HVSF OFFERED A SERIES OF FOUR DEVELOPMENTAL THEATER READINGS DURING THE SUMMER SEASON, TITLED "HVSF2", INCLUDING "HOOK'S TALE" BY JOHN LEONARD PIELMEIER, "THE SCARLET LETTER" AN ADAPTATION OF THE NOVEL BY KATE HAMILL, "BEWILDERNESS" BY ZACHARY FINE, AND "RANCICH" A DOCUMENTARY PLAY CREATED BY STORYHORSE THEATER. ADDITIONALLY, IN THE FALL HVSF PRODUCED TWO PERFORMANCES OF A STAGED READING OF THE FOURTH ANNUAL "BAKEOFF" OF SIX NEW PLAYS WRITTEN BY LOCAL PLAYWRIGHTS (WHO PARTICIPATED IN WRITING WORKSHOPS HOSTED BY LOCAL LIBRARIES) PERFORMED BY PROFESSIONAL ACTORS. THE "BAKEOFF" IS A PART OF HVSF'S FULL CIRCLE INITIATIVE TO BUILD AND SUSTAIN COMMUNITY THROUGH RADICALLY PARTICIPATORY ART-MAKING. (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O)IT WAS ALSO A PART OF OUR HVSTORIES INITIATIVE SHOWCASING STORIES ABOUT THE PEOPLE AND CULTURE OF THE HUDSON VALLEY. HVSF COMPLETED ANOTHER YEAR OF ITS 20-WEEK GENERATION NEXT TRAINING PROGRAM FOR ASPIRING THEATER ARTISTS, TECHNICIANS, AND ADMINISTRATORS. IN TOTAL, THESE CORE PROGRAMS REACHED OVER 35,000 PEOPLE.
