Organizations Filed Purposes: LONGHOUSE RESERVE EXEMPLIFIES LIVING WITH ART IN ALL ITS FORMS. FOUNDED BY JACK LENOR LARSEN, ITS COLLECTIONS, GARDENS, SCULPTURE AND PROGRAMS, REFLECT WORLD CULTURES AND INSPIRE A CREATIVE LIFE.

LHR HOSTED FOUR NEW INSTALLATIONS, TWO BENEFITS, THE TWELFTH STUDENT ANNUAL, THE BIANNUAL LANDSCAPE AWARD LUNCHEON, FOUR LECTURES, ONE WORKSHOP, ONE CONCERT, FOUR HORTICULTURAL TOURS, SEVEN TWILIGHT TOURS, TWO SCREENINGS, ONE ART TOUR AND ONE INTERNATIONAL TOUR. MORE THAN 12,000 PEOPLE CAME TO LONGHOUSE, ATTENDING EVENTS AND TOURS, AND VISITED DURING OUR REGULAR HOURS. THROUGH OUR EDUCATION OUTREACH PROGRAM, CLOSE TO 2,500 CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS FROM LONG ISLAND SCHOOLS, RANGING FROM PRE-K TO COLLEGE STUDENTS, (PLUS MORE THAN 300 TEACHERS/CHAPERONES), VISITED THE GARDENS AND EXHIBITS. TOURS OF LONGHOUSE GARDENS ARE PROVIDED FREE TO SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO REACH OUT TO COMMUNITIES AND INTRODUCE CHILDREN TO ART AND NATURE IN A BEAUTIFUL AND PEACEFUL SETTING. THE 60+ MEMBERS OF OUR DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS HAVE AGAIN PROVEN THEMSELVES IRREPLACEABLE, DONATING MORE THAN 800 HOURS OF THEIR TIME.WINTER WONDERLAND WALK - FEBRUARY 16, 2019:LED BY LH GARDEN COMMITTEE MEMBER TONY PIAZZA, PEOPLE ENJOYED EXPLORING THE GARDENS ON A BRISK WINTER DAY AND LEARNING ABOUT THE PLANTS. OVER 20 PEOPLE ATTENDED.ART + DESIGN CHAT WITH SHERRI DONGHIA - MARCH 16, 2019:FOR HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS AND SENIORS, SHERRI BROUGHT A STASH OF FABRICS AND DISCUSSED DESIGN FASHION, COLOR, INTERIOR ACCESSORIES, ETC. 20 STUDENTS ATTENDED.ART + DESIGN CHAT WITH ERIC FISCHL - APRIL 6, 2019:FOR HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS AND SENIORS, ERIC FISCHL SHOWED A POWER-POINT OF ALL FACETS OF HIS WORK AND THEN BRING THE GROUP OUT TO SEE AND DISCUSS HIS SCULPTURE, "TUMBLING WOMAN." 25 STUDENTS ATTENDED.SPRING SNEAK PEAK TOUR - APRIL 13, 2019:LED BY LH HORTICULTURIST HOLGER WINENGA, GUESTS ENJOYED A PREVIEW OF THE GARDENS BEFORE THE SEASON OPENING. OVER 20 PEOPLE ATTENDED.ART + DESIGN CHAT WITH DELL CULLUM - APRIL 13, 2019:FOR HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS AND SENIORS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN PURSUING PHOTOGRAPHY IN COLLEGE AND BEYOND. 12 STUDENTS ATTENDED.BILINGUAL TOUR - APRIL 13, 2019:FAMILIES AND CHILDREN ENROLLED IN THE ESL PROGRAM, VISITED LONGHOUSE AS PART OF THEIR CURRICULUM TO INTRODUCE THEM TO THE BEAUTY OF THE GARDENS AND TO APPRECIATE ART AND NATURE IN A NATURAL SETTING. 15 PEOPLE ATTENDED.EDUCATORS' SNEAK PEAK WALK-THRU - APRIL 10, 2019:K-12 EDUCATORS, PRINCIPALS AND SUPERINTENDENTS WERE INVITED FOR A SPECIAL PREVIEW BEFORE OPENING DAY OF THE NEW INSTALLATIONS AND TO HEAR ABOUT THE EXCITING PLANS OF THE EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR THE COMING SEASON. OVER 32 EDUCATORS ATTENDED.RITES OF SPRING SEASON OPENING/DAFFODIL VIEWING - APRIL 27, 2019:NEW SCULPTURE IN THE GARDEN: YOUNG JAE LEE, JOSEPH WALSH, WENDELL CASTLE, WILL RYMAN - THIS ANNUAL EVENT OPENED THE OFFICIAL START OF THE 28TH SEASON IN WHICH MORE THAN ONE MILLION DAFFODIL BLOSSOMS -- 200 CULTIVATED VARIETIES PLUS EXOTIC BULBS -- WERE VIEWED IN THE LONGHOUSE GARDENS. THE NEW ARTWORK JOINS SCULPTURES ALREADY ON DISPLAY BY CLAUS BURY, DALE CHIHULY, WILLEM DE KOONING, BRYAN HUNT, GRACE KNOWLTON, SOL LEWITT, COSTANTINO NIVOLA, ALFONSO OSSORIO, PAVEL OPOCENSKY, YOKO ONO, JIM OWEN, RICARDO REGAZZONI, TONY ROSENTHAL, TOSHIKO TAKAEZU AND MARIO YAGI. OVER 400 PEOPLE ATTENDED ON A BEAUTIFUL SPRING DAY.NATIONAL PUBLIC GARDEN DAY - MAY 17, 2019:LHR OPENED TO THE PUBLIC FOR A FREE DAY AND LH HORTICULTURIST HOLGER WINENGA LED A GARDEN TOUR TO AN ENTHUSIASTIC CROWD. OVER 45 PEOPLE PARTICIPATED IN THE TOUR.FAMILY DAY AT LONGHOUSE - MAY 11, 2019:GUIDED TOURS, TREASURE HUNTS, BOOK SIGNINGS OF POPULAR CHILDREN'S BOOKS, PERFORMANCES AND NIBBLES WERE PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE TO FAMILIES TO ENJOY THE GROUNDS AND DISCOVER LONGHOUSE. OVER 300 PEOPLE ATTENDED THIS POPULAR COMMUNAL EVENT. SALON ON THE LAWN - MAY 25, 2019:HOSTED BY THE LONGHOUSE JUNIOR COUNCIL, THIS THIRD ANNUAL EVENT ATTRACTED A YOUNG AND NEW GENERATION OF VISITORS WITH MUSIC, PERFORMANCES, AND COCKTAILS. OVER 90 ENTHUSIASTIC YOUNG PEOPLE ATTENDED THIS EVENT.TEXTILES OF JAPAN AND BOOK SIGNING WITH THOMAS MURRAY - MAY 27, 2019:CONVERSATION EXPLORING THE RANGE AND ARTISTRY OF THE JAPAN'S TRADITION OF FIBER ARTS FOLLOWING BY A BOOK SIGNING WITH MR. MURRAY. OVER 30 PEOPLE ATTENDED THIS VERY INFORMATIVE AND INTERESTING LECTURE, WITH MANY PEOPLE PURCHASING THE BOOK.RADIO FLYER WORKSHOP LED BY STEVE PERLBINDER - JUNE 22, 2019:THIS WORKSHOP INCLUDED A DEMONSTRATION OF FLYING STYLES AND PARTICIPANTS ENJOYED HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRY THEIR HAND AT FLYING A RADIO CONTROL AIRPLANE. 12 PEOPLE ATTENDED THIS FUN AND INFORMATIVE EVENT.LONGHOUSE RESERVE STUDENT ANNUAL XII - JUNE 11, 2019:THE EDUCATION COMMITTEE OF LHR INVITED STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN OUR TWELFTH STUDENT ANNUAL. GUIDED BY THEIR TEACHERS, THEY INTERPRETED THEIR VISITS TO LHR IN PROSE, POETRY, PERFORMANCE, MIXED MEDIA, CRAFT, PHOTOGRAPHY, PAINTING, ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN AND SCULPTURE. MORE THAN 150 RIBBONS WERE AWARDED TO KINDERGARTEN THROUGH GRADE 12 STUDENTS AT A CEREMONY AND RECEPTION. OVER 500 ADULTS AND CHILDREN ATTENDED THIS POPULAR COMMUNAL EVENT.SITE SPECIFIC - NEW INSTALLATIONS - JUNE 22, 2019:ARTISTS STEPHEN TALASNIK AND LAWRENCE WEINER WERE FEATURED. TALASNIK'S FLOATING "HABITATS" MADE OF BAMBOO WERE INSTALLED IN THE BLACK MIRROR, AND LAWRENCE WEINER'S FLOOR INSTALLATION "OUT OF SIGHT" WAS INSTALLED IN THE LEAR MEMORIAL. OVER 300 PEOPLE ATTENDED.OPERA AL FRESCO IN REMEMBRANCE OF INGEBORG TEN HAEFF - AUGUST 2, 2019:CONDUCTOR EVE QUELER RETURNED TO LH THIS SEASON AND INTRODUCED TWO NEW TALENTS, SOPRANO TERESA CASTILLO, AND TENOR MATTHEW WHITE. STARTING WITH A RECEPTION, DINNER FOLLOWED THE BEAUTIFUL PERFORMANCE AND WAS ENJOYED BY GUESTS ON A BALMY SUMMER EVENING. OVER 100 GUESTS ENJOYED THIS MEMORABLE NIGHT OF LISTENING TO BEAUTIFUL MUSIC IN A BEAUTIFUL OUTDOOR SETTING.BIENNIAL LANDSCAPE AWARDS LUNCHEON - SEPTEMBER 21, 2019:THE MOST NOTABLE GARDEN EVENT OF THE SEASON BEGAN WITH A LECTURE AT HOIE HALL FOLLOWED BY A LUNCHEON AND AWARDS CEREMONY AT LONGHOUSE. THIS YEAR'S HONOREES WERE THOMAS WOLTZ, AMY GOLDMAN, CHARLES AND KATHLEEN MARDER, AND LYNDEN MILLER, ALL OF WHOM WERE IN ATTENDANCE. OUR STELLAR LINE UP OF PRESENTERS INCLUDED MARTHA STEWART. 150 PEOPLE THIS PRESTIGIOUS GARDEN EVENTGARDEN AND HOME TOUR FOR LONGFELLOWS - SEPTEMBER 28, 2019:DIANE AND ARTHUR ABBEY OPENED THEIR STUNNING HOME BUILT BY ARCHITECT NORMAN JAFFEE FOR A TOUR AND PRIVATE RECEPTION OF THEIR BEAUTIFUL GARDEN. THIS EVENT WAS IN HONOR OF THOSE WHO DESIGNATED LHR AS A BENEFICIARY, TO ENSURE THAT LONGHOUSE WILL ENDURE FOR GENERATIONS TO COME. OVER 40 GUESTS ENJOYED SEEING THE ABBEY'S BEAUTIFUL HOME WITH THEIR STUNNING COLLECTIONS, INCLUDING A PERSONAL TOUR OF THEIR GARDEN. INSIDERS TOUR OF JAPAN - NOVEMBER 5 - NOVEMBER 17, 2019:THIS 15-DAY TOUR, LED BY YOSHIKO WADA, FOCUSED ON GARDENS, ART INSTALLATIONS, ARCHITECTURE, TEXTILE, CERAMIC AND BAMBOO ARTISANS, WHILE ENJOYING JAPAN'S EXQUISITE CUISINE. THIS SOLD OUT TOUR WAS ENJOYED BY 15 PEOPLE.NEWS FROM THE GARDEN: TROPICAL GARDEN:THANKS TO DENNIS SCHRADER OF LANDCRAFT ENVIRONMENTS, THE TROPICAL GARDEN WAS INSTALLED AGAIN BORDERING BOTH SIDES OF THE RILL, LOCATED WEST OF THE LAP POOL. TWILIGHT TOURS:LONGHOUSE'S HIGHLY PRAISED AND WELL ATTENDED DOCENT-GUIDED TWILIGHT TOURS, WAS BACK FOR SEVEN MONDAYS IN JULY AND AUGUST. PARTICIPANTS WALKED THROUGH THE GARDENS TO PLANTS THAT WERE AT THEIR PEAK AND TO SPACES THAT WERE PARTICULARLY BEAUTIFUL IN THE TWILIGHT HOURS. A TOUR OF THE HOUSE FOLLOWED.SOUND AND SILENCE:ON SATURDAY MORNINGS IN JULY AND AUGUST AT 9AM, ADRIANA BARONE HELD MEDITATION CLASSES USING SOUND HEALING AND RESTORATIVE YOGA IN THE PEACEFUL SURROUNDINGS OF LONGHOUSE.
