STUDENT ADVOCACY'S MISSION IS TO PROVIDE A POWERFUL AND EFFECTIVE VOICE FOR FAMILIES WITH STUDENTS WHO ARE EDUCATIONALLY AT RISK, AND TO ENSURE THAT STUDENTS RECEIVE THE EDUCATION TO WHICH THEY ARE LEGALLY ENTITLED AND WHICH ENABLES THEM TO SUCCEED. STUDENT ADVOCACY ENSURES AN EDUCATION TO ENHANCE A LIFE.
THE OVERCOMING THE ODDS (OTO) PROJECT AND AWARDS PROGRAMS PROVIDES SERVICES FOR AT-RISK YOUTH TO HELP THEM OVERCOME OBSTACLES TO THEIR EDUCATION, STAY IN SCHOOL AND GRADUATE. YOUTH SERVED INCLUDE CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE, CHILDREN WITH LIMITED PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH, DROPOUTS, YOUTH WITH A HISTORY OF ACADEMIC FAILURES OR ATTENDANCE PROBLEMS. STUDENT ADVOCACY PROVIDED EDUCATIONAL ADVOCACY SERVICES TO 445 YOUTHS SUCCESSFULLY IMPROVING SCHOOL SERVICES FOR 407. IN ADDITION, THE OTO AWARDS PROGRAM HONORED 15 YOUTHS WHO MADE SCHOOL A PRIORITY DESPITE SIGNIFICANT OBSTACLES. 4 WERE HONORED AND PRESENTED WITH SCHOLARSHIPS AT THE OTO AWARDS DINNER. 11 WERE HONORED AND PRESENTED WITH FINANCIAL AWARDS AT A SPECIAL RECEPTION.
SCHOOL SUCCESS FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES PROGRAM - STUDENT ADVOCACY PROVIDED EDUCATIONAL ADVOCACY SERVICES FOR 388 CHILDREN AND YOUTH WITH DISABILITIES WHO WERE STRUGGLING IN SCHOOL, TRANSFORMING THEIR SCHOOL EXPERIENCE FROM FAILURE TO SUCCESS. 108 WERE VERY YOUNG CHILDREN IN PRE- SCHOOL,KINDERGARTEN, FIRST OR SECOND GRADE. AFTER OUR INTERVENTION, 92% OF THE PARENTS REPORTED SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS IN ATTENDANCE, SCHOOL BEHAVIOR, ATTITUDE AND ACADEMIC PROGRESS.
SOLUTIONS NOT SUSPENSIONS PROJECT -CHILDREN AND YOUTH WHO MISBEHAVE AT SCHOOL NEED A RESPONSE THAT HELPS THEM LEARN BETTER BEHAVIOR AND ADDRESSES UNDERLYING PROBLEMS THAT CAUSE POOR BEHAVIOR. STUDENT ADVOCACY REPRESENTED 193 YOUTHS ON SCHOOL DISCIPLINE MATTERS INCLUDING MANY CHILDREN IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. FOR 173 OF THESE YOUTHS, WE REDUCED TIME OUT OF SCHOOL AND SECURED ADDITIONAL SUPPORTS AND SERVICES INCLUDING COUNSELING OR BEHAVIOR PLANS. IN ADDITION, WE HELPED FAMILIES ACCESS OTHER COMMUNITY SERVICES TO IMPROVE BEHAVIOR. PARENTS GAVE OUR SERVICE AN AVERAGE GRADE OF 92.
