The Visiting Scholar Program offers short-term independent research residencies for scholars, practitioners, and students. In 2019, we welcomed visitors from 13 countries by hosting 41 postgraduate, faculty, and other professionals -- a 58% increase over 2018 -- and 5 undergraduate scholars. The Visiting Scholar Program also hosted three workshops in 2019 for visiting groups of students and faculty. The public affairs and communications department is responsible for informing and engaging diverse audience in the research, publications, public events, and other activities of The Hastings Center. To achieve these goals, the department prepares and distributes press releases, pitches stories to selected journalists, works with research scholars to develop and place op-eds and other commentaries, produces a weekly newsletter, edits the Hastings Bioethics Forum blog, uses social media for promotion and audience engagement, oversees the website (including developing all content), produces videos of Hastings events, and helps plan and manage those events. In 2019, The Hastings Center strengthened its commitment to public engagement. It conducted an external review of communications activities, which recommended that the Center expand its effort for audience engagement. That recommendation resulted in the hiring of a chief communications officer in June 2019. In 2019, the newsletter went to about 13,000 people. Bioethics forum blog had 100,000 page views and about 4,000 subscribers to an email alert about new posts. The Centers website had 719,000 page views. The Centers Twitter audience grew to 11,100 followers.
