Equity Advocates builds the capacity of nonprofit organizations to address the underlying causes of food inequity through policy and systems change. We partner with New York-based organizations working to alleviate hunger and poverty, providing them with the tools they need to be more civically engaged-including policy education, advocacy training and coalition building services. Through this work, we are building a non-partisan grassroots coalition of powerful advocates and leaders within the food movement.
Equity Advocates' program consists of the following tiers: Tier 1: Food Policy Knowledge & Community Power Building: Food policy analysis, advocacy and relevant funding opportunities are shared to interested nonprofit organizations free of charge through webinars held regularly throughout the year. Tier 2: Capacity Building Courses: EA provides advocacy and leadership development trainings that are one or two-hour-long in-person or webinar trainings that are open to 2-4 staff members from each of the partner organizations;7-8 training sessions are hosted per year. Tier 3: Personalized Technical Assistance:1:1 coaching and accountability partnership to a limited number of partner organizations that have participated in Tiers 1 and 2 to 1) create individualized advocacy workplans, 2) develop customized testimony for public comments, hearings and advocacy opportunities on an on-going basis, and 3) support partners in building relationships with policymakers, including scheduling and preparing for meetings, talking point, material creation and follow up. In 2020, Equity Advocates led 10 advocacy trainings attended by over 300 community food advocates and launched the NY COVID-19 Food Coalition, a multi-sector group of 40+ food system stakeholders. The Coalition advocated for public policies and funding in response to the pandemic and has since expanded to become a central organizing voice for addressing inequities in New York's current food system.
