Organizations Filed Purposes: To forever conserve the forests, farmlands, waters and wild places that advance the quality of life of our communities and the ecological integrity of the Adirondacks.

Land Conservation Program:Adirondack Land Trust (ALT) conservation program focuses primarily on land protection and the long-term stewardship of those lands. Our program area comprises 6,962,266 acres including the Adirondack Park, areas north in Clinton and Franklin Counties, and wildlife linkages to the east and west. Land protection includes fee acquisition of lands as ALT preserves or as additions to the public lands in the Adirondack Park, and conservation easements to permanently protect private farmland, forests, lakes and rivers. In FY 2020, ALT protected 570 feet of wild shoreline on Upper Saranac Lake along the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, and worked on several significant land protection projects including farmland in the Champlain Valley, public land additions to the "Forever Wild" Adirondack Forest Preserve, and lake shore and river conservation projects. The land and easement stewardship responsibilities in FY 2020 included management of 8 fee-owned lands totaling 1,487 acres, and monitoring of 51 conservation easements that protect 15,887 acres through partnership with 78 landowners. Stewardship on fee owned lands included, among other things, improvements to the public trails and information at the Coon Mountain Preserve, and the management and monitoring of four properties expected to be transferred to NYS as Forest Preserve.

Outreach and communications program:This program focuses on educating the general public about the value of land conservation in the Adirondack Region. It enables much of our land conservation work because it inspires landowners to contact us about the possibility of conserving their land, publicizes the benefits of doing so, builds partnerships with other organizations, communities and state agencies, and promotes a land conservation ethic throughout the Adirondacks. Accomplishments of the past year include working with agriculture sector partners in Essex County to begin an outreach campaign to farmland owners, increased social media presence in response to Covid-19 adaptations, new interpretive materials for our Coon Mountain Nature Preserve and an event to encourage people to explore trails there, and a communications inventory in preparation for a new website that will feature resources for owners of forest and agricultural lands.
