Organizations Filed Purposes:
To provide a network of safety and support to immigrants, regardless of status. UIDN provides supportive services, financial assistance, information and strategic services including household support, food pantry, rent and utility aid and transportation assistance.
UIDN provides Rent and Utility assistance to immigrants who reside in Ulster County, a population that has been hit hard by Covid, both medically and economically. In addition, Ulster County is experiencing a housing crisis, partly because increasing gentrification is placing low-cost rentals out of reach for members of a population who often pay more than 50% of their income for rent. During 2020, UIDN helped 110 different households, 171 times. In addition we act as a referral service to other programs that provide rent and utility assistance.
The Family and Household Support program team works to address food insecurity among it immigrant community of Ulster County. The families have been disproportionately affected by the Covid pandemic and as such the number of families in need has more than quadrupled compared to 2019. In the first six months of 2020 we provided food and personal items, such as diapers, sanitary products, hand sanitizers, shampoo, toothpaste and cleaning supplies to approximately 100 families per month. In the second half of the year, July through December the number of families receiving food was approximately 175 families over month which for an average family of four would be more than 1000 individuals per month. Currently at our weekly pantry we also provide information, in the form of flyers, about health, education and legal rights. We also provide furniture, clothing, books, school supplies and bedding materials to families in need.
The Transportation and Accompaniment program provides rides for immigrants of Ulster County who cannot afford them to New York City for Immigration Courts, to the Bronx for ICE and ISAP check-ins, and various local trips including White Plains, Albany, Kingston, JFK, and Long Island. We also provide accompaniment in case where people need assistance; translation at the appointment, help to navigate an unfamiliar area, and varying kinds of assistance that need a person who is fluent in Spanish or cultural mores. Most requests for transportation are important in that if a person cannot get to court dates or ICE check-ins, they face deportation. There has been a huge decrease in demand for transportation since April of 2020, when the Immigration Courts and ICE/ISAP closed because of Covid. From 4/1/20 - 6/11/20, we had no requests. From January to December we arranged for 98 rides that transported 149 people.
