Organizations Filed Purposes: WE MAINTAIN THAT THE KEY TO BREAKING THE CYCLE OF HOMELESSNESS IS NOT ONLY TO PROVIDE SHORT-TERM ASSISTANCE TO HOMELESS FAMILIES AND VETERANS, BUT TO WORK AT ELIMINATING ITS ROOT CAUSES SO THESE INDIVIDUALS CAN BECOME, AND REMAIN, SELF-SUPPORTING. WE IDENTIFY, AND THEN RESPOND TO, THOSE AT-RISK WITH PROGRAMS THAT PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL, TECHNICAL AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT. THIS EMPOWERS THESE FAMILIES AND VETERANS, ENABLING THEM TO FUNCTION INDEPENDENTLY. WORKING IN COLLABORATION WITH INSTITUTIONS IN THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR, NEW GROUND WORKS WITH EXISTING AGENCIES TO BETTER RESPOND TO THE GROWING NEEDS AND CHALLENGES OF LONG ISLAND'S HOMELESS POPULATION.

NEW GROUND PROVIDES INTENSIVE SOCIAL WORK SERVICES AND EDUCATIONAL ADVOCACY/PROGRAMS TO HOMELESS FAMILIES AND VETERANS ON LONG ISLAND.

The Veterans Program offers intensive Social Work services to over 400 homeless Veteran households in Nassau and Suffolk Counties participating in the Northport VA HUD-VASH Program, or on their wait list. The Veteran households have been certified homeless by Northport VA and placed in housing units willing to work with VA requirements and accept the VASH housing subsidy. VASH Veteran households meet regularly with a New Ground Social Worker to receive comprehensive social work services in the following areas: Financial Literacy, Career Development, Education Assistance, Education Advocacy, Reading All-Stars, Tutoring and the Parent Workshop Program. All create Individual Service Plans outlining goals to secure stability and future independence. Veterans and families attend meetings at the VA, in their homes, at New Ground, or other convenient locations.

The JumpStart Program (JSP) provides New Grounds intensive Social Work and education services to actively homeless families in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Every JSP family meets with their New Ground Social Worker on a weekly basis to work toward their outlined goals for future self-sufficiency and independence. All participating adults create an Individual Service Plan outlining these goals in areas of education advancement for parents and children, employment, financial literacy, career development, parenting, life skills and more. JSP families are homeless and working toward permanent, stable housing. Families are referred to New Ground by local homeless shelters, school districts, community based agencies, local Department of Social Services, and others who come into contact with homeless families in need of services.

Through the Long Term Housing Program (LTHP), New Ground Social Workers assist homeless families improve various life skills and education levels so they can increase their household incomes and eventually secure an independent and self-sufficient future. Each parent is assigned a New Ground Social Worker to provide intensive social work services, assisting them with creating an Individual Service Plan outlining the goals they plan to achieve to ensure they increase their income, improve their credit and increase their education to allow them to afford a home of their own when they graduate from the LTHP. Families in the LTHP reside in significantly reduced cost housing units owned and operated by NGIP Inc. New Ground Social Workers provide assistance in areas of self-esteem, problem solving, conflict resolution, parenting, anger management, coping skills, crisis management, career development, employment assistance, financial literacy and more.
