Organizations Filed Purposes: HEART'S MISSION IS TO DEVELOP A GENERATION OF COMPASSIONATE YOUTH WHO CREATE POSITIVE CHANGE FOR ANIMALS, PEOPLE AND THE NATURAL WORLD.

EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT AND DISTRIBUTION IN 2020, HEART CREATED THREE MAJOR EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES. 1) WE DEVELOPED A K-3 RESOURCE GUIDE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FARM SANCTUARY CALLED "EXPLORING THE LIVES OF FARM ANIMALS: LESSONS THAT TEACH COMPASSION." THIS CURRICULUM HELPS CHILDREN UNDERSTAND THE FEELINGS, NEEDS, AND NATURAL BEHAVIORS OF FARM ANIMALS AND DEVELOP A CONNECTION WITH THEM. THE GUIDE INCLUDES LEARNING STATION ACTIVITIES AS WELL AS PROJECTS FOR STUDENTS TO TAKE ACTION. IT IS SCHEDULED TO BE RELEASED IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2021 WITH MODIFICATIONS FOR VIRTUAL LEARNING. 2) IN RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, WE CREATED A ROBUST AND GROWING REMOTE LEARNING COLLECTION OF ACTIVITIES TO NURTURE KINDNESS AND CALM THAT TEACHERS AND PARENTS COULD USE DURING SCHOOL CLOSURES. AREAS OF FOCUS INCLUDE ART, READING, WRITING, SELF-CARE, AND FAMILY TIME. 3) WE RELEASED AN ONLINE INTERACTIVE CLIMATE LITERACY TOOLKIT WITH EARTH CHARTER INDIANA THAT IS AVAILABLE AT TEACHCLIMATE.ORG. IT PROVIDES TEACHERS AND PARENTS OF K-12 STUDENTS WITH DOZENS OF LESSONS AND ACTIVITIES IN SUBJECT AREAS SUCH AS SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES, AND ART, AND FEATURES AN INTUITIVE SEARCH FUNCTION THAT ENABLES USERS TO FILTER CONTENT BY LEARNING ENVIRONMENT (SCHOOL OR HOME), STUDENT AGE RANGE, AND LESSON DURATION.WE CONTINUED TO PROMOTE AND DISSEMINATE OUR FOUR OTHER RESOURCE MANUALS: OUR K-5 AND SECONDARY SCHOOL JUSTICE FOR ALL GUIDES, TOTALING 49 LESSONS; OUR K-12 HUMANE EDUCATION RESOURCE GUIDE, WITH 40 ANIMAL PROTECTION LESSONS; AND OUR PRE-K GUIDE, KINDNESS FOR ALL, WITH A 7-LESSON CURRICULUM. WE ALSO DISSEMINATED OUR EVERYDAY CIRCLES CARDS DEVELOPED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PEACE LEARNING CENTER. THIS TOOLKIT OF 180 HUMANE EDUCATION/SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING ACTIVITY CARDS IS DESIGNED TO FOSTER INTENTIONAL COMMUNITY BUILDING AND PROBLEM SOLVING THAT BECOMES PART OF A DAILY PRACTICE TAKING 20 MINUTES OR LESS. STUDENTS ARE LED THROUGH A PURPOSEFUL PATH BEGINNING WITH INCLUSION, INFLUENCE, AND THEN COMMUNITY ISSUES PERTAINING TO A RANGE OF ANIMAL, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND SOCIAL JUSTICE TOPICS.WE EXPANDED OUR DIGITAL INITIATIVES THROUGH POPULAR LESSON-SHARING PLATFORMS FOR TEACHERS, INDEXING OUR LESSONS TO NUMEROUS NATIONAL LEARNING STANDARDS TO MAKE THEM MORE ACCESSIBLE AND USABLE IN SCHOOLS NATIONWIDE. IN ADDITION, WE USED SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS POPULAR WITH TEACHERS TO BUILD A COMMUNITY OF HUMANE EDUCATORS AND RAISE AWARENESS OF HEART'S LESSONS. THESE DIGITAL EXPANSIONS HAVE ENABLED OUR RESOURCES TO REACH TENS OF THOUSANDS MORE STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS.

MARKETING, SOCIAL MEDIA, AND ADVOCACY A KEY COMPONENT OF OUR ADVOCACY EFFORTS TO PROMOTE HUMANE EDUCATION AND IMPROVE COMPLIANCE WITH THE NEW YORK STATE HUMANE EDUCATION LAW WAS RAISING AWARENESS OF THE MANY BENEFITS THAT HUMANE EDUCATION OFFERS AND PROVIDING FREE ACCESS TO OUR TEACHING RESOURCES ACROSS A VARIETY OF WEB-BASED PLATFORMS. HEART CONTINUED TO MARKET OUR RESOURCES TO GAIN AS WIDE AN AUDIENCE FOR OUR MATERIALS AS POSSIBLE. WE REFRESHED AND IMPROVED OUR WEBSITE, UPGRADING THE SITE'S DESIGN, NAVIGATION, AND LOAD SPEED, MAKING IT MORE RESPONSIVE AND RELEVANT FOR OUR AUDIENCES, AND IMPROVING SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION. AFTER THE REFRESH, OUR TRAFFIC STATISTICS INDICATED THAT THE SITE WAS MUCH MORE USER-FRIENDLY, STREAMLINED, AND ENGAGING. WE ALSO BUILT IN A MEMBERSHIP FUNCTION THAT ALLOWS EDUCATORS AND PARENTS TO SIGN UP ONLY ONCE IN EXCHANGE FOR FREE ONGOING ACCESS TO ANY HEART RESOURCES POSTED TO OUR ONLINE LIBRARY, WHICH WE EXPANDED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. HEART CONTINUED ITS CONTRACT WITH A SERVICE TO MANAGE ITS GOOGLE AD GRANT, THE LEADING SOURCE OF OUR EVER-INCREASING WEBSITE TRAFFIC, CURRENTLY ATTRACTING NEARLY 10,000 VISITS PER MONTH.WE ALSO OPTIMIZED OUR USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND STRENGTHENED OUR SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE TO BETTER UNDERSTAND OUR AUDIENCE MEMBERS AND CREATE A GREATER SENSE OF COMMUNITY. WE DEDICATED MORE STAFF TIME TOWARD SOCIAL MEDIA ACTIVITIES, WHICH HELPED US DETERMINE WHICH KINDS OF CONTENT WORK BEST ON WHICH PLATFORMS, CREATE POSTS THAT RESONATED MORE STRONGLY WITH OUR FOLLOWERS, IDENTIFY PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS THROUGH WHOM WE COULD EXTEND OUR REACH, AND ANALYZE SPECIFIC ENGAGEMENT METRICS ACROSS OUR VARIOUS SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS. WE REGULARLY POSTED BLOGS AND SOCIAL MEDIA UPDATES ON OUR PROGRAMS AND ON THE SUBJECT MATTER INCLUDED IN OUR LESSONS AND ACTIVITIES.

TEACHER TRAINING WE SUCCESSFULLY EXPANDED OUR COMPASSIONATE COMMUNITIES AWARD (CCA) PROGRAM TO 15 ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN BROOKLYN DISTRICTS 15 AND 16 IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BROOKLYN BOROUGH PRESIDENT ERIC ADAMS. IN THIS TRANSFORMATIVE PROGRAM, SCHOOLS COMPETED FOR CASH PRIZES AWARDED FOR THE MOST EFFECTIVE PROJECTS INSTILLING COMPASSION AND STUDENT STEWARDSHIP IN THE SCHOOL AND THE GREATER COMMUNITY. WE REGULARLY CONSULTED WITH TEACHERS AND HELPED GUIDE THE SCHOOLS IN DEVELOPING OR EXPANDING PROGRAMS THAT PROMOTE ANIMAL WELFARE, PROSOCIAL BEHAVIOR, AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY. DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, WE TRANSITIONED TO A REMOTE FORMAT IN THE FINAL MONTHS OF THE YEAR-LONG CONTEST AND STUDENTS SUBMITTED MULTI-MEDIA PRESENTATIONS ON THEIR PLANNED OR COMPLETED SERVICE PROJECTS. THE CULMINATING CELEBRATION THAT WAS SCHEDULED TO BE HELD AT BROOKLYN BOROUGH HALL WAS INSTEAD HELD VIRTUALLY WITH AN INSPIRING VIDEO MESSAGE TO STUDENTS FROM BOROUGH PRESIDENT ADAMS. WE ALSO DEVELOPED A CCA WEBSITE TO CONNECT CURRENT AND PAST PARTICIPANTS AND TO CONTINUE SHARING IDEAS AND RESOURCES.THROUGH VARIOUS COLLABORATIONS, HEART DIRECTLY REACHED 270 TEACHERS IN OUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS. ONE OF OUR MAJOR TEACHER TRAINING PROJECTS WAS A CREDIT-BEARING 36-HOUR ONLINE HUMANE EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSE WE CONDUCTED THROUGH THE NYC DOE THAT QUALIFIED SCHOOLTEACHERS TOWARD A SALARY DIFFERENTIAL. WE ALSO PARTNERED WITH VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA IN LOS ANGELES TO TRAIN 100 OF THEIR HEAD START TEACHERS IN JANUARY 2020 TO IMPLEMENT OUR 7-LESSON KINDNESS FOR ALL PRE-K CURRICULUM. IN ADDITION, WE DEVELOPED AN INTERACTIVE VIDEO TRAINING FOR THIS CURRICULUM SO THAT WE CAN CONTINUE TO TRAIN MORE OF THEIR HEAD START TEACHERS VIRTUALLY DURING THE PANDEMIC. IN CHICAGO, WE CONDUCTED ONLINE CREDIT-BEARING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS THROUGH WITS (WORKING IN THE SCHOOLS) AND THE ROCHELLE LEE TEACHER AWARD SUMMER INSTITUTE. THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH URBAN RESOURCE INSTITUTE IN NYC, IN FEBRUARY 2020 WE TRAINED STAFF AT ONE OF ITS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTERS THAT ACCEPTS PETS TO IMPLEMENT A HUMANE EDUCATION PROGRAM USING OUR EVERYDAY CIRCLES CARDS. WE ALSO EXTENDED OUR REACH NATIONALLY BY CONTINUING TO OFFER OUR FREE ONLINE VIDEO PRESENTATION SERIES IN WHICH WE TRAIN PARTICIPANTS TO TEACH HUMANE EDUCATION.WE CONTINUED TO OFFER GUIDANCE TO MEMBERS OF OUR HEART NETWORK, WHICH SINCE ITS INCEPTION HAD ATTRACTED OVER 380 REGISTRATIONS AS OF YEAR-END, SUPPORTING THE EDUCATION PROGRAMS AT ANIMAL SHELTERS, RESCUE GROUPS, AND SANCTUARIES NATIONWIDE. MEMBERS RECEIVED ACCESS TO CUSTOMIZED RESOURCES FROM OUR LIBRARY OF FREE LESSONS, ACTIVITIES, GAMES, AND VIDEOS; TIPS, TOOLS, IDEAS, AND INSPIRATION TO SUPPORT OUTREACH PROGRAMS; AND MODERATED CONTENT ON THE MADDIE'S FUND ONLINE COMMUNITY PLATFORM.
