Organizations Filed Purposes: NYCHSF MISSION IS TO INTRODUCE PLANT-BASED FOODS AND NUTRITION EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS TO EDUCATE THE WHOLE SCHOOL COMMUNITY ABOUT THE HEALTH, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND SOCIAL JUSTICE ISSUES OF OUR FOOD CHOICES.

VIRTUAL PROGRAMSOUR VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING WAS AVAILABLE TO ANYONE IN THE U.S., AND WE ALSO HAD CANADIAN FAMILY PARTICIPANTS. OUR CLASSES WERE LIVE ON ZOOM SO THE INSTRUCTORS COULD INTERACT WITH THE STUDENTS. WE ALSO PROVIDED EXTENSIVE VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING IN ITHACA, WHICH IS DESCRIBED UNDER THE ITHACA SECTION, SINCE IT WAS UNIQUE TO ITHACA. FROM JUNE THROUGH AUGUST OF 2020, WE PROVIDED EIGHT FREE WEEKLY CLASSES FOR A TOTAL OF 88 INDIVIDUAL CLASSES TO FAMILIES AND THEIR CHILDREN. APPROXIMATELY FIFTY PERCENT OF ATTENDEES WERE FROM NEW YORK CITY. OUR TWO FITNESS CLASSES - ANIMAL POSE YOGA AND HIP HOP AND HEALTH INCLUDED A NUTRITION COMPONENT AT THE END. WE HAD THREE PLANT-BASED COOKING CLASSES (SOUTHERN COOKING, HEALTHY COOKING, AND ITALIAN COOKING) THAT FAMILIES TOOK TOGETHER. CHILDREN SPENDING THEIR DAYS INSIDE WERE ABLE TO VISIT CATSKILL ANIMAL SANCTUARY DURING OUR WEEKLY VIRTUAL TOURS, LED BY A HUMANE EDUCATOR. ADDITIONALLY, WE CONDUCTED A DISCUSSION GROUP "CLASS" CALLED FOOD AND RACE AND A FOOD AND THE ENVIRONMENT CLASS FOR OLDER STUDENTS. FROM SEPTEMBER TO MID- DECEMBER, 2020, WE PROVIDED A SERIES OF FREE ONLINE CLASSES, TAKING PLACE DURING THE SCHOOL DAY, FOR OUR PARTNER LOW-INCOME SCHOOLS. TEACHERS ASSIGNED THE CLASSES - (ANIMAL POSE YOGA AND HIP HOP AND HEALTH) AND HUMANE EDUCATION (CATSKILL ANIMAL SANCTUARY TOURS) TO THEIR REMOTE STUDENTS. APPROXIMATELY FORTY 2NDGRADERS THAT WERE SCHOOLING FROM HOME ATTENDED EVERY WEEK.

NEW YORK CITY PROGRAMSFOOD UNEARTHED: UNCOVERING THE TRUTH ABOUT FOOD IN 2020, WE BEGAN TEACHING OUR FOOD UNEARTHED CURRICULUM TO 62 PRE-K AND 1ST GRADERS AT PS 197 IN CENTRAL HARLEM AND 265 KINDERGARTEN, 1ST AND 2ND GRADERS AT PS 90 IN CONEY ISLAND. IN EARLY MARCH, WE BEGAN TEACHING A FOOD AND THE ENVIRONMENT CLASS AT A HIGH SCHOOL IN CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN THAT WOULD HAVE INCLUDED HEALTHY SNACKS FOR ALL THE STUDENTS. HOWEVER, OUR IN-PERSON PROGRAMMING STOPPED WHEN THE SCHOOLS CLOSED IN MID- MARCH DUE TO COVID-19. WE TRANSITIONED TO A VIRTUAL FORMAT DURING THE SUMMER AND FALL, YOU CAN READ ABOUT THAT ABOVE IN VIRTUAL PROGRAMS. COOL SCHOOL FOOD NYC IN NEW YORK CITY, THIS PROGRAM IS A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN COALITION FOR HEALTHY SCHOOL FOOD AND THE NYC OFFICE OF FOOD AND NUTRITION SERVICES (OFNS). OFNS CONTINUES TO OFFER SCHOOLS THE ABILITY TO ADOPT AN ALTERNATIVE MENU THAT FEATURES PLANT-BASED RECIPES USUALLY TWICE PER WEEK OR A VEGETARIAN MENU. WE WORK WITH OFNS TO PROVIDE INPUT ON RECIPE DEVELOPMENT FOR THE ALTERNATE AND VEGETARIAN MENUS, AND IN ADDITION WE SUGGEST WAYS TO POSITIVELY IMPACT THE STANDARD MENU. OUR ADVOCACY HELPED TO FACILITATE THE ADDITION OF HUMMUS AND PRETZELS AS A PLANT-BASED ENTRE OPTION ON THE LUNCH MENU EVERY DAY IN ALL SCHOOLS. IN MARCH, JUST BEFORE THE PANDEMIC, WE HAD A MEETING WITH THE LEADERS OF THE OFNS, AND GOT AGREEMENTS FROM THEM TO INCREASE THE PLANT-BASED OPTIONS ON THE VEGETARIAN MENUS. HOWEVER, THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO CARRY OUT THOSE AGREEMENTS DURING THE REST OF THE YEAR DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. THEY WERE, HOWEVER, ABLE TO CONTINUE THE VEGETARIAN MENUS AT THE VEGETARIAN SCHOOLS. OTHER COMPONENTS TO OUR COOL SCHOOL FOOD PROGRAM IN NEW YORK CITY INCLUDE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE WHOLE SCHOOL COMMUNITY, INCLUDING PARENTS, TEACHERS, AND FOOD SERVICE PERSONNEL. DUE TO COVID-19, WE WERE ONLY ABLE TO CONDUCT ONE IN PERSON FAMILY DINNER NIGHT BEFORE THE SCHOOLS CLOSED. INSTEAD, WE PIVOTED TO A NEW MODEL, DELIVERING DONATED PLANT-BASED MEALS TO FAMILIES IN NEED AT THE SCHOOLS WE PARTNER WITH. EACH FAMILY ALSO RECEIVED NUTRITION EDUCATION HANDOUTS AND A RECIPE BOOKLET IN EITHER ENGLISH OR SPANISH. IN TOTAL, WE DID 9 SOCIALLY DISTANT DINNERS AT FOUR SCHOOLS, SERVING APPROXIMATELY 900 MEALS.

ITHACA PROGRAMSIN JANUARY THROUGH MID-MARCH, WE TAUGHT COOL SCHOOL FOOD IN THE CLASSROOM TO A TOTAL OF 8 CLASSES AT 2 DIFFERENT ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS: ENFIELD AND NORTHEAST, REACHING APPROXIMATELY 175 STUDENTS.THIS IS A RECIPE SPECIFIC CURRICULUM THAT HAPPENS ON THE MORNING OF THE DAY THIS ITEM IS ON THE SCHOOL LUNCH MENU. MANY MORE WERE PLANNED FOR THE UPCOMING MONTHS WHICH WERE CANCELLED DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. IN OCTOBER - DECEMBER WE VIRTUALLY TAUGHT 27 FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES CLASSES TO THREE CLASSES OF STUDENTS, APPROXIMATELY 30 STUDENTS IN EACH CLASS, 90 STUDENTS TOTAL, EACH STUDENT RECEIVING 9 LESSONS. WE PROVIDED 5 INFORMATIONAL CLASSES ABOUT NUTRITION AND HEALTH AND THE REASONS PEOPLE CHOOSE TO EAT PLANT-BASED, THE BENEFITS OF EATING MORE PLANT-BASED, WHICH TYPES OF FOODS TO EAT MORE OF (WHOLE PLANT FOODS), AND WHICH TO EAT LESS OF (PROCESSED FOODS AND ANIMAL FOODS), MACRONUTRIENTS FACTS AND MYTHS, AND MORE.
