TO INSPIRE AND ENABLE NEW GENERATION OF ENTREPRENEURS AND RECOGNIZE THOSE INDIVIDUALS, ORGANIZATIONS AND PROGRAMS THAT HAVE INFLUENCED DENTAL, MEDICAL, AND PUBLIC HEALTH.
The Dr. Edward b. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund, Inc. (Shils Fund) is committed to furthering the vision of dr. Edward b. Shils who was a pioneer of entrepreneurship. The organization endeavors to inspire and enable new generations of entrepreneurs and recognizes those individuals, organizations, and programs that have positively influenced the dental and medical community in the public health arena. In 2019, the Shils Fund held 4 board calls, 1 annual board meeting, 1 awards and dental student competition in which 6 recipients were honored for their accomplishments of health care leadership, access to care programs, and oral health research. During the event the Shils Fund also held a dental student entrepreneur competition where 4 dental students presented their entrepreneurial ideas to a panel and placed for their ideas; and 1 Shils Event at the Greater New York Dental Meeting in New York which included three panels, a keynote speaker, and equipment demonstration all geared toward dental students. The 2019 Shils Fund innovator awards reception awarded people, organizations, and programs that safeguard the oral health of underserved communities and populations and positively influence the dental community. A prize was given to people and programs from across the health care community in recognition of their bold impact on the field and their respective communities. In addition, the Shils Fund continued to support education programs with a co-sponsored scholarship with the dental trade alliance foundation which was awarded to a deserving dental school student as well as supporting a program to help the oral health needs of a vulnerable population, the Alpha Omega-Henry Schein Cares holocaust survivors oral health program. The Shils Fund also helped financially support DICE (Dental Innovators, Creators, and Entrepreneurs program, the New York County Dental Society, and the NYU College of Dentistry for their National Symposium for Global Service Learning.
