THE COOKE SCHOOL AND INSTITUTE ENVISIONS A WORLD IN WHICH ALL PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS ARE INCLUDED AS VALUED MEMBERS OF THEIR COMMUNITIES, LEADING INDEPENDENT AND PURPOSEFUL LIVES. TO REALIZE THIS VISION, OUR SCHOOL EDUCATES STUDENTS WITH DIVERSE DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AND BACKGROUNDS, FROM EARLY CHILDHOOD THROUGH YOUNG ADULTHOOD. THROUGH INNOVATIVE PROGRAMMING AND INTENSIVE, EXPERIENTIAL INSTRUCTION, DESIGNED TO FOSTER STUDENT INDEPENDENCE, WE INTEGRATE ACADEMIC, SOCIAL AND LIFE SKILLS TO PREPARE OUR STUDENTS TO DISCOVER AND FULFILL THEIR LIFE GOALS. WE ALSO STRIVE TO PROMOTE THE WORLD WE ENVISION BY CULTIVATING COMMUNITY PARTNERS AND SHARING OUR KNOWLEDGE.
THE COOKE SCHOOL AND INSTITUTE PROVIDES EDUCATIONAL AND THERAPEUTIC SERVICES TO STUDENTS (5-21 YEARS) WITH SPECIAL NEEDS AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO OTHER INSTITutions.
THE COOKE SCHOOL SERVES 300 DIVERSE STUDENTS IN ITS THREE SCHOOL DIVISIONS: COOKE GRAMMAR SCHOOL (K-8TH GRADE), COOKE ACADEMY (9TH-12TH GRADE) AND THE SKILLS PROGRAM (AGES 18-21 YEARS). STUDENTS RECEIVE MEANINGFUL, DIFFERENTIATED SPECIAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTION THAT PROMOTES SELF-DETERMINATION AND FOSTERS INDEPENDENCE. THROUGH A COMBINATION OF ROBUST ACADEMICS AND INTEGRATED THERAPEUTIC SERVICES (PROVIDED BY SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS, SPEECH AND LANGUAGE, OCCUPATIONAL AND PHYSICAL THERAPISTS AND SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS), STUDENTS LEARN TO BECOME VALUED MEMBERS OF THEIR COMMUNITIES. A COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION ARE HALLMARKS OF A COOKE EDUCATION. STUDENTS TAKE PART IN A COMPREHENSIVE TRANSITION PROGRAM THAT INCLUDES INTERNSHIP PLACEMENTS AND COMMUNITY-BASED ACTIVITIES THAT FOSTER VOCATIONAL READINESS AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF LIFE SKILLS.
THE COOKE INSTITUTE (CI) FURTHERS COOKE'S MISSION TO SHARE OUR KNOWLEDGE WITH EDUCATORS IN THE BROADER COMMUNITY BY PROVIDING TEACHER TRAINING AND EDUCATIONAL CONSULTING SERVICES TO A VARIETY OF SCHOOLS AND ORGANIZATIONS. CI WORKS WITH EDUCATORS TO ELEVATE OUTCOMES IN GENERAL AND SPECIAL EDUCATION BY PROVIDING CONSULTING AND TRAINING SERVICES IN MORE THAN 800 PRE-K-8TH GRADE CLASSROOMS. CI PARTNERS WITH NYC PUBLIC, NON-PUBLIC AND CHARTER SCHOOLS IN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES WITH DIVERSE STUDENT POPULATIONS AND IS AN APPROVED NYC DOE VENDOR AND NYSED CTLE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROVIDER. CI CONSULTANTS COACH EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATORS WITHIN PRE-K PROGRAMS AND PROVIDE CUSTOMIZED CONSULTING PLANS FOR CLASSROOM TEACHERS (K-8TH GRADE) IN LITERACY, MATHEMATICS OR SPECIAL EDUCATION.
