The Academy for Teachers raises respect for a noble and beleaguered profession by honoring and supporting exceptional teachers, the kind of teachers who change young lives. We bring them together with remarkable experts, intellectuals, and artists for inspiring master classes and other events that expand their knowledge and lift their spirits. Our programs, held in partnership with leading institutions, demonstrate that teachers deserve the support of our culture's best and brightest. Our programs have served 1,700 teachers, who collectively teach 170,000 students every year.
MASTER CLASS: Our signature master classes are offered in all subject areas. They are inspiring and intimate-each is limited to 18 exceptional teachers. During these day-long programs, teachers learn from an icon and from each other. Those accepted for a class demonstrate exceptional passion, creativity, and devotion. They become Fellows of the Academy and join our community of New York's finest educators.
FELLOWS EVENTS: Teachers who are Academy Fellows work in far-flung schools. Many feel isolated in classrooms. These free concerts, plays, book groups, lecture, and other activities bring them together and sustain them intellectually. We also organize events led by our Fellows-they are master teachers yet always looking to improve. These popular events let them share their best lessons with others. Everyone benefits, especially the city's students.
CHAPBOOKS: As part of our mission to raise respect for the teaching profession, The Academy commissions well-known writers to write about the teachers who made the most difference in their lives. We publish these in charming chapbooks that we snail mail to our Fellows three times a year to cheer them on. We also mail them to our donors and supporters, as a reminder that teachers change lives. We then post them online, in the order that they appeared, for all the world to see.
