Organizations Filed Purposes:
To improve inclusion and accessibility for people with disabilities by designing and building custom and multi-user adaptive equipment and by providing educational and volunteer opportunities that involve people of all abilities and backgrounds.
To respond to disability by designing and building custom adaptive equipment, and providing educational programming in cardboard carpentry and adaptive design principles, to advance accessibility and inclusion in our communities.
The Adaptive Design Association in collaboration with community members designed and built 197 adaptive equipment components for 70 individuals and 66 multi-user pieces for 8 schools in NYC. These include solutions that promote academic performance, recreation, better positioning, self-care, work-readiness, and play. We worked with 35 families, 15 schools, and 14 other organizations. We also fabricated and shipped 8,500 tangible symbol cues to the American Printing House for the Blind for nationwide distribution. The education program participants, interns, and volunteers participated in 2,379 hours of learning equipment fabrication, finishing, evaluation, and graphic design skills; cultivating valuable soft skills like collaborative problem-solving and teamwork. Community members include marginalized, often overlooked populations, including youth with autism, retired professionals, and students with and without disabilitiesall working to build awareness and appropriate adaptations that create inclusive communities. Our team also made 150 hours of presentations reaching 1,085 people of all ages at 14 organizations from NYC, Colorado, California, Canada, Puerto Rico, UAE, Germany, China, and India.
