THE MISSION OF THE ALLIANCE OF FAMILIES FOR JUSTICE IS TO SUPPORT, EMPOWER AND MOBILIZE FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS IMPACTED BY THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM SO THEY CAN MARSHAL THEIR COLLECTIVE POWER TO CREATE A JUST WORLD.
In 2019, we significantly expanded our direct support services with the official launch of the AFJ Legal Support Unit and Family Support Unit, which work hand in hand to address the pressing legal, social, emotional, and mental health needs our families have.
Each month we hosted a community organizing meeting. These meetings are used to discuss issues of concern to our members, share news and events, organize activities and create a safe space for sharing and healing. We also use these meetings to welcome home people who have been released from prison. Additionally, our members distribute materials and conduct outreach throughout New York City and State. We offered several communication skills trainings, and hosted three regional conferences on the impact of mass incarceration on families and communities to build our base in Upstate New York.
