ZANKEL HALL IN CARNEGIE HALL/ ATTENDANCE: 540 ACO'S SEASON OPENED WITH TWO WORLD PREMIERES: VALERIE COLEMAN'S CONCERTO "PHENOMENAL WOMEN" WITH IMANI WINDS, AND ALEX TEMPLE'S SCI-FI OPERA "THREE PRINCIPLES OF NOIR" FEATURING SINGER MEAGHAN BURKE, WITH DIRECTION BY AMBER TREADWAY, AND COSTUMES BY STORM GARNER. THE PERFORMANCE ALSO INCLUDED A CELEBRATION OF JOAN TOWER'S 80TH BIRTHDAY REVISITING HER 2006 WORK CHAMBER DANCE. APRIL 11, 2019/ ZANKEL HALL IN CARNEGIE HALL/ ATTENDANCE: 442 NYC PREMIERE OF THE MULTIDISCIPLINARY WORK "WHERE WE LOST OUR SHADOWS", CO-COMMISSIONED BY ACO, CARNEGIE HALL, THE KENNEDY CENTER, SOUTHBANK CENTRE, AND CAL PERFORMANCES. CO-CREATED BY COMPOSER DU YUN AND VISUAL ARTIST KHALED JARRAR, AND FEATURING SINGER HELGA DAVIS, PAKISTANI QAWWALI SINGER ALI SETHI, AND PERCUSSIONIST SHAYNA DUNKELMAN. EVENING ALSO INCLUDED GLORIA COATES' SYMPHONY NO. 1, "MUSIC ON OPEN STRINGS," FROM 1973, AND MORTON FELDMAN'S 1980 WORK "TURFAN FRAGMENTS".

NEW MUSIC READINGS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR EMERGING COMPOSERS: THROUGH READINGS IN NEW YORK CITY AND ACROSS THE CONTINENT WITH PARTNER ORCHESTRAS IN GRAND RAPIDS (MI), PHILADELPHIA (PA), SARASOTA (FL) AND DETROIT (MI), ACO SUPPORTED 24 EMERGING COMPOSERS WHO HEARD THEIR WORKS REHEARSED AND PERFORMED BY A PROFESSIONAL ORCHESTRA FOR THE FIRST TIME. ACO LAUNCHED A MULTIYEAR COMMISSION CONSORTIUM TO ENHANCE SUPPORT FOR PROMISING YOUNG COMPOSERS BEYOND THE READINGS. THIS NEW MODEL PROVIDES TRAINING THROUGH A READING, USES THEIR NEW SKILLS TO WRITE A NEW WORK, AND SETS THE WORK THREE TIMES FOR DIFFERENT AUDIENCES ACROSS THE COUNTRY, WITH TIME FOR REVISION BETWEEN PERFORMANCES WITH THE ALABAMA SYMPHONY, AMERICAN YOUTH SYMPHONY IN LA AND ACO IN NEW YORK. ALUMNI OF READING SESSIONS ARE ALSO ELIGIBLE FOR COMMISSION OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH THE TOULMIN FOUNDATION COMMISSIONS FOR WOMEN COMPOSERS AND THE UNDERWOOD COMMISSION.

MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAM:PROVIDING IN-SCHOOL AND AFTER-SCHOOL CLASSES, WORKSHOPS AND LESSONS FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN EIGHT SCHOOLS AROUND IN THE BRONX, BROOKLYN, QUEENS AND MANHATTAN. STUDENTS UNDERTAKE INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP PROJECTS, LEARN TO COMPOSE AND PERFORM, AND BUILD MUSICAL SKILLS, WHILE ALSO ENHANCING TRANSFERABLE ABILITIES SUCH AS COMMUNICATION, ORGANIZATION, TEAMWORK, AND LISTENING SKILLS. OVER 680 STUDENTS RECEIVED DIRECT INSTRUCTION RESULTING IN 19,555 STUDENT INTERACTIONS DURING THE YEAR.
