Organizations Filed Purposes:
To diversify participation in opera through the mentorship of emerging operatic writers and the development of new works.
COMPOSER LIBRETTIST DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM - MENTORSHIP: ALT continued to offer its acclaimed Composer Librettist Development Program in 2019. The CLDP is the most extensive full-time resident artist program for emerging writers for the opera stage. During 2019, artists working on operas commissioned under the auspices of the CLDP received mentorship from some of the country's leading artists, including composer/librettist Mark Adamo, librettist Mark Campbell, dramaturg Cori Ellison, and director/dramaturg Lawrence Edelson. (A total of 12 artists were served through the CLDP in 2019).
COMPOSER LIBRETTIST DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM - COMMISSIONS: In 2019, ALT continued the development of 5 commissioned operas: THE LIFE AND DEATH(S) OF ALAN TURING by Justine F. Chen and David Simpatico; THE HALLOWEEN TREE by Theo Popov and Tony Asaro; SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE CASE OF THE FALLEN GIANT by Evan Meier and Ellen Lewis; THE OPPOSABLE THUMB, by Liliya Ugay and Julian Crouch; and MURASAKI'S MOON by Michi Wiancko and Deborah Brevoort. In addition, ALT initiated a new commission, THE SELFISH GIANT, by Clarice Assad and Lila Palmer. (12 artists were served directly by the commissioning program; $3,000 of space was donated in kind for this program, which is not reflected in the total program expense).
COMPOSER LIBRETTIST DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM - WORKSHOPS: In 2019, ALT held developmental workshops for operas developed under the auspices of the CLDP, as well as for works commissioned by the company. These piano/vocal and orchestral workshops were carried out to provide artists with the resources necessary to further develop their operas in progress. Small public readings of works in process were held to share the development process with audiences in New York City and Chicago. (Over 700 people attended public events.)
