Organizations Filed Purposes: ARTISTS SPACE IS A CONTEMPORARY ART SPACE THAT PROVIDES DIRECT SUPPORT TO ARTISTS THROUGH EXHIBITION OPPORTUNITIES AND PUBLIC PROGRAMS.

ARTISTS SPACE'S EXPLICIT HISTORICAL MISSION IS TO BE A PLATFORM FOR ARTISTS - BOTH EMERGING AND ESTABLISHED - AND TO ACTIVELY ENGAGE THEM IN OUR PROGRAMS AS AUDIENCE MEMBERS AND AS PARTICIPANTS. DURING FISCAL YEAR 2020, WE WELCOMED THOUSANDS OF VISITORS TO OUR EXHIBITIONS AND PROGRAMS, SUPPORTING NUMEROUS ARTISTS, PERFORMERS, FILMMAKERS, WRITERS, MUSICIANS, CURATORS, ART HISTORIANS, AND CULTURAL THEORISTS, AND PROVIDED ART EDUCATION UNDER-SERVED MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, ARTISTS SPACE HAS UNDERTAKEN A TREMENDOUS INSTITUTIONAL TRANSFORMATION CENTERED ON SECURING AND EXTENSIVELY RENOVATING A NEW LONG-TERM HOME (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O) AT 11 CORTLANDT ALLEY IN DOWNTOWN NEW YORK. ON DECEMBER 6, 2019, WE OPENED OUR TWO-STORY SPACE TO THE PUBLIC.ARTISTS SPACE EXHIBITIONSTHIS YEAR, ARTISTS SPACE INAUGURATED ITS NEW BUILDING WITH DANICA BARBOZA, JASON HIRATA, YUKI KIMURA, DUANE LINKLATER (DECEMBER 6, 2019-FEBRUARY 6, 2020) A FOUR-ARTIST EXHIBITION THAT OVERTLY HARKENED BACK TO ARTISTS SPACE'S EARLIEST EXHIBITIONS. ESCHEWING AN OVERT CURATORIAL FRAME OR ORGANIZING PRINCIPLE, THE EXHIBITION WAS DRIVEN BY THE PRIMACY OF ARTISTS AND THEIR IDEAS, AN EMBRACE OF HYBRID INTELLECTUAL AND MATERIAL PRACTICES, AND AN INSISTENCE THAT ARTISTS SPACE SHOULD CONSTANTLY ADAPT AND RECONFIGURE ITSELF IN ORDER PROVIDE A SENSITIVELY ATTUNED ENVIRONMENT FOR THE ARTISTS, THINKERS, AND AUDIENCES THAT WE SERVE. ON FEBRUARY 21, 2020, ARTISTS SPACE OPENED JANA EULER'S EXHIBITION UNFORM, THE GERMAN PAINTER'S FIRST INSTITUTIONAL SOLO SHOW IN THE UNITED STATES. RESPONDING DIRECTLY TO THE RENOVATION AND CHARACTER OF ARTISTS SPACE'S NEW EXHIBITION SPACE, EULER'S PAINTINGS INCLUDE BOTH CONVENTIONALLY-STRETCHED CANVASES AND EXPANSIVE STRUCTURELESS "SLUG" FORMS THAT FUNCTION AS BOTH AUTONOMOUS BEINGS AND DRAMATIC, HIGHLY CHOREOGRAPHED ARCHITECTURAL ELABORATIONS. IN THESE WORKS, EULER MANIPULATES THE FORMS OF FIGURATIVE REPRESENTATION TO DELINEATE NEW WAYS OF LOOKING AT SOCIAL AND CULTURAL CONFINEMENTS AS WELL AS REFLECTING ON THOSE RARE CATALYTIC MOMENTS OF CHANGE OR REALIZATION, BE THEY EMOTIONAL OR INSTITUTIONAL, WHERE UNFORMING LEADS TO REFORMING. EULER'S NEW PAINTINGS EXTEND MANY OF THE ARTIST'S INVESTIGATIONS OF THE DYNAMIC INTERRELATIONS OF SENTIENT FORMS AND THEIR SURROUNDING SPACE-INSTITUTIONAL, DOMESTIC, AND PERCEPTUAL- UNFORM STRETCHES THE NATURE OF PAINTING ITSELF, RENEWING ITS ENERGY IN CONFRONTING THE CONDITIONS THAT INFORM IDENTITY AND SELF-PERCEPTION. THE EXHIBITION CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC ON MARCH 13, 2020 DUE TO COVID-19 BUT WILL OPEN AGAIN IN AUGUST 2020. DURING THE MONTH THE EXHIBITION WAS OPEN, WE WELCOMED 700 VISITORS. ON FEBRUARY 29, 2020, ARTISTS SPACE, IN COLLABORATION WITH ACCLAIMED THEATER CRITIC HILTON ALS, PRESENTED A STAGED READING OF PLAYWRIGHT ADRIENNE KENNEDY'S THE OWL ANSWERS, A PERFORMANCE WHICH INAUGURATED THE EXHIBITION SHE WHO IS: ADRIENNE KENNEDY AND THE DRAMA OF DIFFERENCE. THIS EXHIBITION CELEBRATES AND ELUCIDATES THE SINGULAR VISION OF 88-YEAR-OLD PLAYWRIGHT ADRIENNE KENNEDY THROUGH A SERIES OF TEN LIVE PERFORMANCES, READINGS, SCREENINGS, AND ARCHIVAL MATERIALS THAT TRANSFORM THE BUILDING'S LOWER LEVEL INTO A THEATER AND EXHIBITION IN HOMAGE TO KENNEDY'S RADICAL VISION. THE MULTI-FORMAT PROGRAM ENGAGES WITH THE STORIES, LITERARY FIGURES, MOVIES, AND HISTORICAL EVENTS THAT CONTINUE TO INSPIRE THE PLAYWRIGHT'S GROUNDBREAKING WORK. KENNEDY'S PLAYS BOLDLY DEFY MODERNISM'S FORMAL TRAJECTORY BY FEVERISHLY JUXTAPOSING CHARACTERS, STORIES, AND LOCATIONS INTO DIZZYINGLY MORPHING, UNSETTLED DOMESTIC DRAMAS THAT ENACT THE IRRECONCILABLE CONFIGURATIONS OF BLACK AMERICAN EXPERIENCE. KENNEDY CHANNELS THESE VIOLENT ILLUMINATIONS THROUGH THE LITERARY AND CINEMATIC ARCHETYPES THAT HAVE DEFINED HER OWN ARTISTIC EXPERIENCE, CREATING STARTLING MULTIPLICITIES OFTEN LOCATED WITHIN SINGLE SHIFTING CHARACTERS. IN THEIR BRUTAL ELOQUENCE, KENNEDY'S PLAYS DRAW FROM THESE DIVERSE MYTHOLOGICAL, HISTORICAL, AND GEOGRAPHIC REFERENCES TO CONSTITUTE IDENTITY AMIDST THE VIOLENT FORCES THAT HAVE HISTORICALLY DEMARCATED ITS AMBIVALENT SHAPE. DUE TO COVID-19, THE EXHIBITION WAS ONLY OPEN UNTIL MARCH 13, 2020 BUT WILL REOPEN TO THE PUBLIC IN AUGUST 2020. DURING THIS PERIOD OF CLOSURE, HILTON ALS CREATED AN ONLINE AUDIO GUIDE FOR THE EXHIBITION ON OUR WEBSITE. WHILE THE SOME OF THE SCREENINGS AND PERFORMANCES HAVE NOT YET OCCURRED, THEY WILL TAKE PLACE IN 2021. IN THE SHORT PERIOD THE EXHIBITION WAS OPEN, WE RECEIVED 400 VISITORS. ARTISTS SPACE PUBLIC PROGRAMSFROM JULY 2019 - JUNE 2020, WE PRESENTED ELEVEN PUBLIC PROGRAMS AT 11 CORTLANDT ALLEY WHOSE ATTENDANCE RANGED FROM 75-300 PEOPLE AND POSTPONED TEN PROGRAMS SCHEDULED FOR THE REST OF THE FISCAL YEAR DUE TO COVID-19.
