We work side by side with grassroots activists to ensure that their voices are fully represented in local, national, regional, and global policymaking.
Asia Catalyst, Inc. ("AC") works with grassroots groups from marginalized communities in East and Southeast Asia that promote the right to health. AC trains our partners to meet high standards of effective and democratic governance, to establish a stable foundation for future growth, and to conduct rigorous human rights research and advocacy. AC aims to help our partners become leading advocates at the local, national, and global levels.
Myanmar Human Rights Documentation and Advocacy Program: Asia Catalyst applies its core curricula, Know It, Prove It, Change It: A Rights Curriculum for Grassroots Groups and The Nonprofit Survival Guide to empower and train community-based organizations to understand and advocate for their human rights, particularly the right to health. We work with marginalized and underserved communities in the context of HIV and generally to build sustainable, transparent, and functional organizations to conduct effective community mobilization and policy advocacy at the local and national levels to improve their health and lives. Through a year-long capacity-building program, we tailor our curricula to selected groups identified through an open application program, to achieve their advocacy goals, including through intensive tailored coaching, training workshops, and supplemental funding for research and advocacy activities. Partner groups include LGBT, HIV-positive, and ethnic minority groups.
Supporting marginalized group advocacy start-up work in Southeast Asia: Apart from intensive country program work in Myanmar, the major programming we implement in Asia, we also engage in providing technical support and small funding to young leaders in the region. This past year, we supported COVID emergency support to Thailand and Myanmars most marginalized groups, including Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand, transgender people, and transgender sex workers in Thailand, as well as people living with HIV in Myanmar. We conducted technical assistance to people who use drugs on barriers to TB services in Myanmar, began research on gaps in support to children living with HIV/AIDS in Nepal, and supported a multi-country empowerment project to women who use drugs in the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
Advocacy: Asia Catalyst's advocacy work aims to create positive policy change by working with CBOs and nongovernmental organizations in Asia to more effectively protect and promote the right to health at the local, national, and international levels. Targeted and collaborative research, documentation, and analysis form the foundation for strategic policy and media work on issues of most concern to the communities Asia Catalyst works with. We engage in UN mechanisms including special procedures and the Universal Periodic Review, also working with legal experts to create reports for submission and publication. This year, we worked with Fordham Law School to prepare a Universal Periodic Review shadow report on marginalized group needs in Myanmar. We also participated in international and regional conferences on issues including the World AIDS Conference.
