The Asian American Federation (AAF) is an umbrella leadership organization that represents the collective voice of 70 community-based organizations (CBOs) serving 1.3 million Asian Americans, the fastest-growing population in New York City. Our mission is to raise the influence and well-being of the pan-Asian American community through research, policy advocacy, public awareness, and organizational development.Founded in 1989, AAF is one of the strongest leadership voices advocating for better policies, services, and funding that lead to more justice and opportunity for Asian immigrants, one of New York City's poorest and most underserved communities. We support youth, families, workers, and seniors from more than 20 ethnic groups diverse in language, culture, and religion that make up New Yorks Asian community by spearheading expert research and unrelenting advocacy; boosting civic engagement; supporting small businesses; training the next generation of nonprofit leaders; and mobilizing member groups and elected leaders to respond to the communitys changing needs.Major Activities:Our activities can be grouped into four core programmatic areas:Research: Our reports provide hard data on and highlight issues affecting the Asian American community, such as poverty, mental health, and limited access to economic opportunity, as well as provide policy recommendations to address those challenges.Advocacy: We advocate to implement our research recommendations with elected officials and funding agencies in order to affect changes in policy.Direct Programs: We also use our research to design direct services programs that address new or underserved needs. We raise money for these programs and re-grant funds to member organizations who help us implement the programs.Training Nonprofits: We provide workshops, capacity building trainings, and mentorship to our member organizations, allowing them to thrive as nonprofits.Program Service Accomplishments:As a leadership organization for the pan-Asian community, we have created and led coalitions drawn from our 70 member nonprofits around pressing issues impacting the community, such as mental health, economic development, senior services, domestic violence prevention, and the decennial census.Since 2016, AAF has led the research and advocacy efforts to highlight the increasingly visible mental health needs of the pan-Asian American community in New York City and to secure resources to build capacity for linguistically and culturally competent mental health services and programs. Since FY 17-18, we have provided approximately 15 presentations and workshops to address mental health needs in the Asian community.AAF has created over 20 original policy briefs and research reports on Asian American issues, such as poverty, mental health, economic contributions and challenges, and social service needs, which have been instrumental in driving policy changes at the city and state levels. In August 2017, we released updated City Council briefs on Asian demographics in the 51 City Council districts. In October 2017, we produced the first-ever report focusing on the mental health needs of the Asian American community, titled Overcoming Challenges to Mental Health Services for Asian New Yorkers. In June 2018, we released a report on the high poverty rates in the Asian American community, titled Hidden in Plain Sight: Asian Poverty in New York City.Since 2016, AAF has been one of the lead organizers for coordinating rapid response advocacy for Asian New Yorkers impacted by changing immigration policies, harsh immigration enforcement, and workers rights issues. Since FY 17-18, we organized over 25 rallies, press conferences, and meetings to advocate for Asian communities adversely affected by federal and local policies. For over four years, AAF has run immigrant integration programs for the Asian community in partnership with several of our member agencies. These programs aim to provide ESOL classes, entrepreneurship workshops to help new immigrants access opportunities, and immigration legal services to help immigrants obtain citizenship. Since 2016, we have served nearly 13,000 Asian immigrants through these programs. We have trained our 70 member organizations to fundraise, advocate, and use communications tools more effectively; build leadership capacity at the board, executive, and senior leadership levels; and build coalitions to develop resources for the pan-Asian American community. Since FY 17-18, we have provided nearly 20 workshops to build the capacity of Asian nonprofits.Since 1989, we have raised more than $15 million to re-grant to Asian nonprofits, empowered 70 nonprofits, and transformed the lives of tens of thousands of Asian New Yorkers. In the last four years alone, we secured nearly $4.5 million in awards to build capacity for critical immigrant integration and legal services, as well as mental health services, for the Asian American community throughout New York City.In the last five years, we have also helped to secure nearly $15 million in awards to build capacity for critical services for Asian Americans and other communities of color through the City Councils Communities of Color Nonprofit Stabilization Fund.
