Organizations Filed Purposes: BEAT THE STREETS WRESTLING (BTS) PROVIDES WRESTLING PROGRAMS IN NYC FOR K-12 STUDENTS WHO MAY NOT OTHERWISE HAVE ACCESS TO POSITIVE OUTLETS FOR THEIR TALENTS AND POTENTIAL. BTS SERVES STUDENTS IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS, 75% ARE CHILDREN OF COLOR AND 74% ARE CONSIDERED DISADVANTAGED BY THE NYC DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. THE PROGRAMS INCLUDE BEGINNER TO ADVANCED WRESTLING TRAINING TO PREPARE CAPABLE STUDENTS TO COMPETE AT THE CITY, STATE, AND NATIONAL LEVELS. IN ADDITION TO WRESTLING TRAINING, BTS EMPHASIZES OFF-THE-MAT DEVELOPMENT BY DRAWING PARALLELS BETWEEN WRESTLING AND LIFE CHALLENGES, AND BY OFFERING COLLEGE VISITS, SAT PREP TUTORING, FINANCIAL SKILLS WORKSHOPS, INTERNSHIPS, AND COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS.

BEAT THE STREETS WRESTLING'S MISSION IS TO DEVELOP THE FULL HUMAN AND ATHLETIC POTENTIAL OF URBAN YOUTH AND STRENGTHEN THE CULTURE OF NEW YORK CITY WRESTLING. THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, BEAT THE STREETS WORKS WITH MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS IN ALL FIVE BOROUGHS OF NYC TO PROVIDE STUDENT-ATHLETES WITH A SAFE, POSITIVE ATMOSPHERE IN WHICH THEY CAN LEARN THE ESSENTIAL LIFE LESSONS OF PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY AND TEAMWORK, PHYSICAL FITNESS AND NUTRITION, SELF-CONFIDENCE, AND LIFE-LONG LEARNING, SETTING THEM ON THE PATH TOWARDS COLLEGE AND A PROFESSIONAL CAREER.

THE JUNIOR LEAGUE PROGRAM PROVIDES EQUIPMENT, COACHES, AND ORGANIZED COMPETITIONS TO NYC MIDDLE SCHOOLS TO CREATE AND IMPROVE WRESTLING PROGRAMS. JUNIOR LEAGUE STUDENT-ATHLETES LEARN HOW TO BE SELF-RELIANT AND WORK ON A TEAM, IMPROVE THEIR FITNESS AND DEVELOP BASIC WRESTLING SKILLS. THE PROGRAM SUPPORTS 35 MIDDLE SCHOOL TEAMS, OFFERING SCHOOL SANCTIONED PROGRAMS TO FIRST THROUGH EIGHTH GRADERS. IN THE 2018-2019 SEASON, THERE WERE 852 JUNIOR LEAGUE PARTICIPANTS, 188 OF WHOM WERE GIRLS. THERE IS A STRONG EMPHASIS ON CONTINUING TO ACCRUE THE BENEFITS OF AN ATHLETIC CAREER IN HIGH SCHOOL, SERVING AS A FEEDER PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL-LEVEL PUBLIC SCHOOL ATHLETIC LEAGUE (PSAL) WRESTLING PROGRAMS.

BTS SENDS STUDENT-ATHLETES TO LOCAL, REGIONAL, AND NATIONAL COMPETITIONS. BY FULLY FUNDING COMPETITION AND TRAVEL, BTS YOUTH FROM LOW-INCOME BACKGROUNDS ARE ABLE TO COMPETE. IN THE 2018-2019 SEASON, BTS COMPETED IN 21 DIFFERENT TOURNAMENTS AND PROVIDED OPPORTUNITIES FOR 367 KIDS. BTS CLAIMED TEN INDIVIDUAL ALL-AMERICAN HONORS, NATIONAL TOP EIGHT PLACERS, NINE OF WHICH WERE GIRLS. ADDITIONALLY, BTS SENT 16 STUDENTS, EIGHT BOYS AND 8 GIRLS, ON A SUMMER TOUR WHICH INCLUDED SIX REGIONAL UNIVERSITIES.

THE TRAINING CENTER PROGRAM PROVIDES YEAR-ROUND NEIGHBORHOOD-TRAINING CENTERS IN MANHATTAN (2), BROOKLYN AND STATEN ISLAND. THE TRAINING CENTERS ARE OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS FROM K-12TH GRADE, WITH PRACTICES OFFERED AT LEAST FOUR DAYS PER WEEK. IN THE 2018-2019 SEASON, THERE WERE 1,736 REGISTERED STUDENT-ATHLETES, 539 OF WHOM WERE GIRLS, ATTENDING OUR TRAINING CENTERS. THROUGH THE TRAINING CENTERS, STUDENT-ATHLETES HAVE ACCESS TO LOCAL, REGIONAL, AND NATIONAL COMPETITION OPPORTUNITIES.
