BEHIND THE BOOK (BTB) DEVELOPS ENGAGED READERS AND WRITERS IN UNDERSERVED NYC PUBLIC SCHOOLS BY DESIGNING AND DELIVERING PROGRAMS THAT ARE MULTI-DISCIPLINARY, CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE, AND PROMOTE DEEPER CONNECTIONS TO BOOKS AND THEIR AUTHORS. BEHIND THE BOOK IS A LITERACY NONPROFIT SERVING PREK - 12TH GRADE STUDENTS IN TITLE L NYC PUBLIC SCHOOLS. BTB PARTNERS WITH TEACHERS TO CREATE IMMERSIVE CURRICULUM UNITS BASED ON A BOOK THAT INCLUDE WORKING WITH THE AUTHOR, WRITING, ART, AND EXPLORING THE CONTENT OF THE BOOK THROUGH DRAMA, AND RELEVANT FIELD TRIPS.BEHIND THE BOOK EMPOWERS THE NEXT GENERATION OF READERS AND WRITERS BY NURTURING CRITICAL THINKING, CREATIVITY, AND SELF-CONFIDENCE IN OUR STUDENTS, GIVING THEM THE TOOLS THEY NEED TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL.IN 2020, BEHIND THE BOOK SERVED 1,666 STUDENTS IN 14 SCHOOLS THROUGH 73 PROGRAMS AND 450 WORKSHOPS IN BROOKLYN, MANHATTAN, AND THE BRONX. 32% OF OUR PROGRAMS SERVED STUDENTS IN SPECIAL ED CLASSROOMS AND FIVE PROGRAMS TOOK PLACE WITH ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS.BEHIND THE BOOK BEGAN CONDUCTING VIRTUAL PROGRAMS ON MARCH 13, 2020 AND COMPLETED 23 PROGRAMS WHICH CONSISTED OF 125 WORKSHOPS IN ALL OF OUR PARTNER SCHOOLS. BECAUSE OF COVID-19, WE WERE NOT ABLE TO CONDUCT 12 PROGRAMS AND WERE UNABLE TO DO EITHER OF THE TWO ALL-SCHOOL PROGRAMS THAT WE HAD PLANNED. ALL OF OUR SCHOOL PARTNERS HAVE COMMITTED TO PARTNERING WITH US FOR THE FY21 SCHOOL YEAR AND WE WILL CONDUCT THE FIRST HALF OF THE YEAR VIRTUALLY AND WILL LIKELY DO THE SAME FOR THE SECOND PART OF THE YEAR.BEHIND THE BOOK DONATED 10,350 BOOKS TO STUDENTS AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES, DOWN FROM 14,000 THE YEAR BEFORE DUE TO COVID.
