Blue Engine optimizes how educators work together to create engaging, individualized learning experiences for students marginalized by racism and bias.
In Blue Engine's AmeriCorps Program, Blue Engine recruits, trains, and supports a corps of Blue Engine Teaching Apprentices (BETAs) who work alongside teachers in district middle and high schools serving historically oppressed communities. In 2019-20, approximately 46 BETAs served 1,194 students acrosss 6 schools in NYC. BETAs increase academic rigor and college readiness by: reducing student-to-teacher ratios in math and literacy classes, utilizing data to inform personalized instruction, and expanding learning time during and after school. At the same time, Blue Engine staff develop BETAs as educators, many of whom enter the classroom as full-time teachers after completing the apprenticeship
In Blue Engine's Co-Teaching Program, Blue Engine coaches teachers working multi-adult classrooms to implement high impact co-teaching models to connect with all students and differentiate instruction based on each student's needs. In 2019-20, Blue Engine coached multi-adult classroom teams across 10 schools in NYC that served 979 students. In these classrooms, Blue Engine increased student academic outcomes and improved teacher insturctional practices and mindsets through providing coaching related to individualization, planning for differentiation, response to data, and team effectiveness
