The Canaan Senior Service Center is a community based organization that reaches out to citizens 60 years of age or older in the Harlem community and beyond, to provide activities, programs and services which enhance their quality of life, diverse interests and needs.
Senior Services funded by the New York City Department for the Aging (DFTA):We are a congregate program who normally serves an average of 65 clients a day by assisting with benefits, entitlements, meals & activities. However due to the Covid-19 pandemic guidelines (enforced and recommended) activities and services were offered online and virtually. Our focus this year, centered mostly on keeping communication open with our 150+ clientele list. Telephone Reassurance and wellness calls were predominate and eventually technology to help the seniors navigate getting on line. Exercise and Health classes were offered virtually via Zoom. The center operates Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm. Our meals service-breakfast & lunch- combined feeds approximately 50 clients a day however were suspended in March of 2020 at the height of the pandemic until restrictions are eased. The program also offers Physical Health & Science exercise classes (i.e. Tai Chi, dance etc.); Health & Wellness (i.e.: Diabetes education; Dental or Foot care; Cancer prevention, Hypertension etc.); Arts & Culture (Jazz Concerts; Painting; Collages etc.) Education/Recreation (History, Spanish Language classes etc.); and Technology (computers, apps etc.).Transportation is also available to our clients to and from the center, medical appointments, or even to vote.
