FOUNDED IN 1988, CMA IS UNIQUE IN ITS MISSION TO INTRODUCE CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES TO THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF THE ARTS BY PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES TO MAKE ART SIDE-BY-SIDE WITH PROFESSIONAL, WORKING ARTISTS. DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS, THE WEE (UNDER 5S), FINE ARTS, AND ANIMATION STUDIOS CREATE DAILY-CHANGING WORKSHOPS THAT FOLLOW OUR PEDAGOGY: LOOK, MAKE, SHARE.
THE MISSION OF THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF THE ARTS IS TO INTRODUCE CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES TO THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF THE ARTS BY PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES TO MAKE ART SIDE-BY-SIDE WITH WORKING ARTISTS.
GENERAL PROGRAMMING: IN THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2020, CMA SERVED ABOUT 99,436 VISITORS; WITH OVER 51,221 RECEIVING FREE SERVICES. NOTABLE CMA PROGRAMS INCLUDE FREE ART ISLAND OUTPOST ON NEW YORK CITY'S HISTORIC GOVERNORS ISLAND; OUR ANNUAL CULTURAL FESTIVAL SERIES FEATURING CONTEMPORARY AND TRADITIONAL ART AND CULTURE FROM AROUND THE WORLD; PUBLIC EXHIBITIONS PROGRAM THAT CHANGES THREE TIMES A YEAR AND SHOWCASES HIGH-QUALITY THEMATIC EXHIBITIONS OF ESTABLISHED AND EMERGING ARTISTS, INCLUDING SOME WORKS BY CHILDREN.
COMMUNITY PROGRAMS: IN THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR, CMA SERVED NEARLY 17,057 PEOPLE OFF-SITE, IN OVER 20 EDUCATION SITES, LIBRARIES, COMMUNITY CENTERS, OR SHELTERS ACROSS THE CITY. OVER 80% OF THE YOUNG ARTISTS SERVED IN OUR SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS COME FROM MINORITY BACKGROUNDS. CMA'S APPROACH TO EXPERIENCING AND CREATING WORKS OF ART BENEFITS EACH CHILD'S INTELLECTUAL, PERSONAL, AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT, AND IS PARTICULARLY POWERFUL IN REACHING AT-RISK CHILDREN AND UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES.
CLASSES: CMA SERVED OVER 11,771 PEOPLE IN OUR AWARD-WINNING CLASSES OFFERING IN BOTH MEDIA AND FINE ART MEDIUMS. CLASSES INCLUDE: START STUDIO (0-5 YEARS), AFTER SCHOOL (5-12 YEARS), AND ART COLONY (6-15 YEARS).
