CHRISTODORA'S WILDERNESS CAMP, THE MANICE EDUCATION CENTER ("MEC") IN THE BERKSHIRE MOUNTAINS IN MASSACHUSETTS, IS THE SHOWCASE LOCATION FOR PROGRAMS IN WILDERNESS SKILLS, ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP AND SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT. STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM A CAREFULLY CONSTRUCTED LADDER OF OPPORTUNITIES - FROM A ONE WEEK INTRO COURSE FOR 6TH GRADERS TO LONGER FOUNDATION AND ADVANCED COURSES, CULMINATING WITH INTENSIVE HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP TRAINING AND B.R.I.D.G.E. CAREER - READINESS PROGRAMS. BUILDING ON FOUNDATIONS OF THE "3 R'S" (POSITIVE RISK-TAKING, RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY), STUDENTS SET GOALS, WORK ON TEAM PROJECTS, STUDY ECOLOGY AND LEADERSHIP, AND MASTER CHALLENGING BACK COUNTRY ADVENTURES. HALF OF STAFF MEMBERS ARE RETURNING ALUMNI, PROVIDING INTENSIVE SMALL GROUP SUPPORT AND SERVING AS POWERFUL ROLE MODELS FOR SUCCESS.MEC ALSO HOSTS NYC PUBLIC SCHOOL GROUPS DURING THE FALL AND SPRING FOR MULTI-DAY "FIELD TRIPS", OFTEN IN CONNECTION WITH CHRISTODORA'S IN-CLASSROOM WINTER ECOLOGY PROGRAM (WEP). THESE TRIPS HAVE PROVEN IMPACT DESPITE THEIR SHORT DURATION AND INSPIRE STUDENTS TO CONTINUE WITH CHRISTODORA OVER MANY YEARS.CHRISTODORA'S SUMMER ECOLOGY PROGRAM ("SEP") TAKES PLACE AT THE YALE FORESTRY CAMP DEEP WITHIN THE GREAT MOUNTAIN FOREST IN NORFOLK, CONNECTICUT. WORKING IN SMALL GROUPS WITH CHRISTODORA ALUMNI AND OTHER PROFESSIONAL MENTORS, SPECIALLY SELECTED STUDENTS LEARN ECOLOGICAL CONCEPTS AS THEY DEVISE, CONDUCT AND PRESENT ORIGINAL FIELD RESEARCH PROJECTS.ALL CHRISTODORA STUDENTS RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THE RESIDENTIAL/CAMP PROGRAMS, DETERMINED FOR EACH FAMILY ON A SLIDING SCALE; MOST MEET FEDERAL GUIDELINES TO QUALIFY FOR FREE LUNCH. In 2019 170 students received a scholarship. STUDENTS IN THE WEEKEND PROGRAM PAY ONLY A $20 REGISTRATION FEE PER SEMESTER.
CHRISTODORA'S NEW YOUTH CONSERVATIONISTS LOCAL AND OTHER WEEKEND / OUT OF SCHOOL TIME PROGRAMS ENABLE MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO STAY ACTIVE AND CONNECTED YEAR-ROUND AND TO BECOME AGENTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE AND RENEWAL WITHIN THEIR COMMUNITIES AND IN NATURAL AREAS THROUGHOUT THE CITY. ACTIVITIES INCORPORATE PROJECT MANAGEMENT, SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND JOB READINESS SKILLS. THE PROGRAM'S HOME BASE IS IN SPACE MADE AVAILABLE TO CHIRSTODORA BY THE NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN. STUDENTS PERFORM COMMUNITY SERVICE, CONSERVATION AND CITIZEN SCIENCE PROJECTS, GAIN EXPOSURE TO CAREER PATHWAYS, AND CONTINUE THE CHRISTODORA TRADITIONS OF ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP, COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP.
CHRISTODORA'S WINTER ECOLOGY PROGRAM ("WEP") BRINGS TEAMS OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATORS TO OVER 70 PUBLIC MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOMS IN UNDER-RESOURCED NYC NEIGHBORHOODS FOR AN ENGAGING 7 WEEK INTRODUCTION TO ECOLOGY COURSE. THE CURRICULUM IS CUSTOMIZED FOR THE NEEDS OF EACH CLASSROOM AND TEACHER AND IS ALIGNED WITH NYC AND NYS REQUIREMENTS AS WELL AS NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS. THE HANDS-ON CURRICULUM ALLOWS STUDENTS TO REDEFINE THEMSELVES AS SCIENTISTS AND NATURE-LOVERS AND PURSUE OPPORUNITIES TO ATTEND SUMMER SESSIONS AT MEC AND JOIN CHRISTODORA'S AFTER-SCHOOL, SUMMER ECOLOGY AND OTHER LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS. 22 OF THE SCHOOL GROUPS TAKE TRANSFORMATIVE 3-DAY FIELD TRIPS TO THE MANICE EDUCATION CENTER.
